Lan Ha Bay and Ha Long Bay are the same limestone seascape — since 16 September 2023 one World Heritage site of 1,133 islands — and the real difference is which side you board the boat on. The Ha Long side holds 775 of those islands, the famous name and several times more visitors; the Cat Ba side holds 358 islands, a national park of more than 17,360 hectares, a village no road reaches, and a bay where you can kayak in something close to silence. Our family runs boats from Viet Hai village on the Lan Ha side, so we are not neutral. But we have sent plenty of guests to Ha Long when it was the better fit, and this guide explains how we decide.

Are Lan Ha Bay and Ha Long Bay the same place?
Geologically, yes. The same drowned limestone runs from Ha Long city in Quang Ninh south-west to Cat Ba Island in Hai Phong, and the water in between has no fence in it. Ha Long Bay was listed by UNESCO in 1994. On 16 September 2023, at the 45th session in Riyadh, the listing was extended to take in the Cat Ba archipelago, under the name Ha Long Bay–Cat Ba Archipelago — Vietnam’s first World Heritage site to span two provinces. The core zone covers 65,650 hectares and 1,133 islands, 775 of them on the Ha Long side and 358 on the Cat Ba side, with 4,910 recorded species between them.
Administratively and practically, no. Ha Long Bay is run from Quang Ninh; Lan Ha Bay is the stretch of water on the eastern side of Cat Ba, run from Hai Phong, and since 1 July 2025 part of the Cat Hai Special Zone. Lan Ha on its own is over 7,000 hectares with around 400 islands and 139 pockets of sand, and it was admitted to the Most Beautiful Bays in the World club on 26 January 2020. The two bays have separate tickets, separate boat fleets and, until April 2026, separate cruise routes. That is why the question comes up: you are choosing a departure point and a style of trip, not a different landscape.
Cat Ba itself is the third part of the choice. It is an island of about 144 km² with a national park founded in 1986, three town beaches, a prehistoric site at Cai Beo and, on its far side, Viet Hai village. Choosing Lan Ha Bay usually means choosing Cat Ba as well, and that adds land to what is otherwise a water-only trip. The bay on its own is covered in the Lan Ha Bay complete guide.

What Ha Long Bay does better
Three things, honestly. The first is the journey: Ha Long city is closer to Hanoi, and the expressway makes the drive around 2.5 hours with no ferry at the end. If you have one night to spare and want to be back in the Old Quarter for a late dinner the next day, that hour matters.
The second is choice of ship. Ha Long has the largest overnight fleet in the north, from budget boats to the ships with pools and spas, and if you want a particular grade of cabin on a particular date you will find it there more easily than anywhere else. Lan Ha has good overnight boats too — we compare them in the Lan Ha Bay overnight cruise guide — but far fewer of them.
The third is the name. Ha Long is the bay people have heard of, and for some travellers that is the point of the trip. There is nothing wrong with that. The 775 islands on the Ha Long side are the same rock as ours, and the view from a deck at dawn is the same view.
What Lan Ha Bay and Cat Ba do better
Kayaking as transport, not a slot
On the Ha Long side kayaking is usually an item on a cruise programme: a set place, a set half-hour. On Lan Ha it is how the day works. A full-day Lan Ha Bay boat tour from the village side paddles through the Bright and Dark cave into an enclosed lagoon, along the floating fish farms, and onto beaches that disappear at high tide, with lunch on the boat and swimming between stops. Beginners manage it; the water inside the islands is flat.
Quiet water and dark nights
Fewer boats is the difference guests notice first. It also changes what you can do after dark. Lan Ha Bay has no city on its shoreline, and on the darkest nights of the month — the days around the new moon — the plankton light up around a paddle. Our sunset and night kayaking trip leaves from the village pier for exactly this, and we say plainly when the moon is wrong for it.
Land: a national park and a village with no road
This is the part Ha Long simply does not have. Cat Ba National Park, founded in 1986, covers more than 17,360 hectares of forest and sea, with 1,595 plant species, 1,927 land animal species and the last wild population of the Cat Ba langur — more than 90 animals by late 2024, living on coastal limestone cliffs and seen from the water, if at all. The short walk climbs Ngu Lam peak (220 m) through the Kim Giao forest in about 1 hour 45 minutes return. The long walk crosses the island to Viet Hai: roughly 9–12 km, 4–5 hours, past the 3.2-hectare freshwater swamp forest at Ao Ech. Both are in the Cat Ba National Park hiking guide.
Viet Hai village is where the trek ends and where our family lives: a farming valley of 87 households and about 295 people inside the park, with no road linking it to the rest of Cat Ba — not by regulation, but by geography — mains electricity only since 16 August 2009, and recognition in June 2025 as Hai Phong’s 13th community tourism site. Above it is Navy Peak, 259 m, where the navy built a radar station in 1965 and moved it in 1968 after repeated bombing; the climb is about three hours return. Most of our guests never see Ben Beo twice. They cross Lan Ha Bay on the full-day Lan Ha Bay boat tour — kayaking, swimming, lunch on board, a stop at a floating fish farm — and the boat lands them at Viet Hai pier for the night. Getting there from Hanoi: the journey compared
Ha Long is the easier trip. A car or shuttle from Hanoi runs the expressway to Ha Long city in around 2.5 hours, and the cruise piers are in the city. Cat Ba is a stage longer. The route changed in 2026: the old Got pier closed to tourist traffic, so everything from the Hai Phong side now leaves from Dong Bai pier and crosses to Cai Vieng wharf on the island — about 15 minutes on the car ferry, under 10 on the passenger speedboat. Between the two bays there is a ferry from Tuan Chau, on the Ha Long side, to Gia Luan pier in the north of Cat Ba, which is how people move from one to the other on their own. Two further changes are coming: the second terminal at Hai Phong’s Cat Bi airport, due around 2027, and the Lao Cai–Hanoi–Hai Phong railway, under construction since 19 December 2025 and due by 2030. What it costs: fixed fees and what moves
We do not print boat, cruise or room prices, because they move with the season and the size of your group and are out of date within months. What is fixed is set by the state and is the same on every boat. On the Lan Ha side that is the bay ticket: 120,000 VND per adult and 60,000 VND per child, free for children under six or under 1.2 m. Reaching Viet Hai adds the electric cart from the pier, 50,000 VND per person for the 10-minute ride. Park entry is charged by route, from 80,000 VND to 160,000 VND per adult. Ha Long has its own state sightseeing fee, priced by route and by day or overnight itinerary; the cruise will tell you the current figure when you book.
Everything above is paid in cash, and there is no ATM in Viet Hai — withdraw in Cat Ba town before you cross. Whichever bay you choose, if someone on a dock quotes a “tour fee” several times the ticket price, walk on. Can you do both bays in 2026?
Yes, and for the first time without a bus in the middle. On 20 April 2026 the authorities licensed cross-bay cruise routes, so an overnight ship can now start in Ha Long Bay, sail through the heritage core and finish in Lan Ha Bay; some itineraries stop at the entrance to our valley. The other way to do both is older and still works: an overnight cruise on the Ha Long side, then the Tuan Chau–Gia Luan ferry across to Cat Ba and two nights in Viet Hai. You arrive at the village with the famous bay done and spend the rest of the trip in the quiet one. Either way, give the Cat Ba side at least two nights; the village is at its best in the evening and early morning, which is exactly what a single day-boat visit never shows you.

The first quote makes a point worth repeating: storm warnings close both bays to all boats, sometimes for a day, occasionally for three, and this is most likely between May and September. The best months on either side are October–November and March–April. If your dates are fixed in summer, build in a spare half-day, and choose an operator who tells you about a closure before you travel rather than on the dock.

Is Lan Ha Bay worth it compared to Ha Long Bay?
Yes, if you want to kayak, swim and have the water to yourself. It is the same limestone and, since 16 September 2023, the same World Heritage site, with 358 islands on the Cat Ba side against 775 on the Ha Long side. What you give up is the famous name and the largest choice of cruise ships; what you gain is quiet water and an island with a national park and a village behind it.
Is Ha Long Bay overrated?
No. The scenery is the reason the whole area is listed, and the Ha Long side has more of the islands. What people react to is boat traffic, not the bay. If crowds bother you, board on the Lan Ha side or take a cross-bay cruise that starts in Ha Long and ends in Lan Ha; if a comfortable overnight ship close to Hanoi is the priority, Ha Long is still the right answer.
How many days do you need for Lan Ha Bay and Cat Ba?
Two days and one night is the minimum that makes sense: a full day on the bay by boat and kayak, then a night in Viet Hai village. Three days adds an overnight cruise or the 9–12 km trek across the national park. A single day from Hanoi is possible but shows you the bay and nothing else, and most of it is spent on the road.
Which bay is better with kids?
Both work, and neither involves walking on the boat day. Lan Ha has the edge for families: children under six or under 1.2 m ride the bay free, the 139 small beaches give calm shallow water to swim from, and the flat lane through Viet Hai suits gentle cycling. Overnight cruises on either side have family cabins; ask about minimum ages for kayaking.
When is the best time to visit either bay?
October–November and March–April. Summer, May to September, has the warmest water — 28–30°C — but also typhoons, and a storm warning closes both bays to all boats. Winter is cool and misty, better for walking and the village than swimming. For bioluminescence on Lan Ha, plan around the darkest nights of the month, whatever the season.
How do I get from Hanoi to Lan Ha Bay?
By bus or car to Dong Bai pier on the Hai Phong side, across to Cai Vieng wharf on Cat Ba by car ferry (about 15 minutes) or speedboat (under 10), then by road to Ben Beo harbour — 3 to 3.5 hours in all. From Ben Beo, boats cross Lan Ha Bay; the speedboat to Viet Hai takes about 15 minutes. Got pier, in older guides, is closed.
Are the boats safe on Lan Ha Bay and Ha Long Bay?
Rules on inspections and sailing in bad weather were tightened across northern Vietnam after 2025, and neither bay sails under a storm warning. On any boat, check for life jackets you can reach, an operator who cancels when the warning comes, and a deck that is not overloaded. Do I need cash, and is there an ATM?
Yes, carry cash. The Lan Ha Bay ticket, the electric cart and the park fees are paid in cash, and many small operators on both sides cannot take international cards. Cat Ba town and Ha Long city have ATMs; Viet Hai village has none, so withdraw before crossing. At our homestay we accept VND, US dollars, euros and cards, with a 3% card fee.
