Lan Ha Bay Overnight Cruise: Vietnam’s Most Magical Night on the Water

Ha Long Bay has the fame. Lan Ha Bay has the magic. This is Vietnam’s most underrated overnight experience — where the crowds thin, the water clears, and a wooden cruise ship becomes the best room you’ve ever slept in.

Why Lan Ha Bay, Not Ha Long Bay?

Ha Long Bay is magnificent. It is also, in peak season, thick with cruise ships — hundreds of them, anchored in the same three or four spots, competing for the same sunset. Lan Ha Bay lies directly south of Ha Long, sharing the same geological wonder and emerald water, but administered under a different system that limits the number of overnight vessels. The result is a bay that feels genuinely wild: fewer boats, cleaner water, more accessible kayaking lagoons, and the kind of silence that reminds you why you came to Vietnam in the first place.

Lan Ha Bay also has Cat Ba Island on its western shore — the largest island in the archipelago, covered in national park jungle and home to one of Vietnam’s most extraordinary car-free villages. A cruise here isn’t just a boat ride. It’s the best way to connect three things: Cat Ba Island, the national park, and the open bay.

The Lan Homestay Cruise Experience

Lan Homestay’s 2-Day 1-Night Lan Ha Bay Cruise departs from Viet Hai Village pier — already an adventure in itself, since reaching Viet Hai requires a 20-minute boat crossing from Cat Ba Town through the edge of the national park. The cruise runs on a traditional wooden vessel with private en-suite cabins, a sun deck for lounging, and a kitchen preparing fresh seafood at every meal.

A typical itinerary looks something like this:

  • Afternoon Day 1: Board at Viet Hai pier. Sail into Lan Ha Bay as the afternoon light turns the limestone golden. First swim stop at a secluded beach. Sundowner on the top deck as the karsts turn orange, then purple, then silhouette.
  • Evening Day 1: Fresh seafood dinner on board. Night squid fishing with the crew — competitive, surprisingly addictive, and the squid grilled five minutes later is the best thing you’ll eat all trip. (Optional) Bioluminescent kayaking in an enclosed lagoon if conditions allow.
  • Morning Day 2: Wake up anchored in absolute stillness. Morning tai chi on the top deck. Kayak through sea caves and into hidden lagoons before the day warms up. Return to Viet Hai for a late breakfast at Lan Homestay.

Kayaking Through Sea Caves

Kayaking is included in the cruise itinerary, and it’s the highlight for most guests. The bay contains dozens of enclosed lagoons — called hồ in Vietnamese — accessible only by kayak through low cave entrances at high tide. You duck under the rock, emerge into a perfectly still pool surrounded on all sides by vertical limestone, and realise you might be the only people in there. These are the moments Lan Ha Bay was made for.

Swimming, SUP, and Beach Time

The cruise stops at two or three different swimming spots, selected based on the weather and tides. Stand-up paddleboards are available on board. The water temperature stays warm from April through November (26–30°C), and visibility underwater is remarkable — mask-and-snorkel enthusiasts will find an abundance of marine life beneath the surface.
