For most people with two days, a full day on Lan Ha Bay followed by a night in Viet Hai village gives more than an overnight cruise; a cruise earns its place when you have three days and want to sleep on the water. The day boat runs 09:00–15:30 from Ben Beo harbour and covers the caves, the kayaking and the swimming that people come for. The cruise adds sunset and sunrise from a deck, and since 20 April 2026 it can add the Ha Long half of the bay as well. Why Lan Ha Bay rather than Ha Long Bay?
Lan Ha Bay sits directly south of Ha Long Bay, with the same emerald water and the same limestone towers — around 400 of them — and a fraction of the boat traffic. It belongs to the Cat Ba archipelago, and since September 2023 the two bays have been one World Heritage site. Working floating fish farms still sit under the cliffs, though far fewer than a decade ago after the rafts were consolidated. Since 20 April 2026, licensed cross-bay cruise routes connect Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay directly, and two of them end at the entrance to our valley or at Viet Hai pier. What does a Lan Ha Bay day tour include?

Who it suits
Travellers with two days or less, families with young children, and anyone staying on Cat Ba who wants the whole bay without repacking. It also suits people who get seasick: the day boat keeps to sheltered water and you are on land by dinner.
What does an overnight cruise give you that a day tour cannot?
What you get
- A cabin on the water: sunset and sunrise over the karsts, squid fishing off the stern at night, and an anchorage the day boats have left by four o’clock.
- All meals on board, kayaking, swimming, cave visits and a floating village stop — the same activities, spread over two days rather than one.
- On the 2026 cross-bay itineraries, the Ha Long Bay sights as well: some ships now sail from Ha Long Bay into Lan Ha and finish at the Viet Hai entrance or at our pier.
Cruise rates depend on the ship, the cabin and the season, and range widely between a small boat with around ten cabins and the large luxury vessels. Who it suits
Couples, photographers, and travellers for whom the bay is the trip rather than one part of it. If waking up surrounded by limestone is the picture you came to Vietnam with, no day tour replaces that, and you should plan three days rather than two.
Our 3-day cruise and homestay combines the two: a night on the water with a cooking class on board, then the ship’s tender or our shuttle boat to the village for a night in the valley and the Navy Peak hike, 259 m, about 3 hours return, to the site of a naval radar station built in 1965. The third option: sleep in the village, spend the day on the bay
This is the one most visitors never hear about, and it is what we would build for almost anyone with two days. Viet Hai is a farming valley of 87 households and about 295 people inside Cat Ba National Park, on the shore of Lan Ha Bay. No road links it to the rest of the island — not by regulation, but by geography — and mains electricity only arrived on 16 August 2009. Around 90% of its visitors are international, and most of them come for forty minutes on a day boat and leave. The valley is at its best in the evening and early morning, which is exactly what day-trippers never see.
So: arrive on the full-day bay boat from Ben Beo, step off at Viet Hai pier in the late afternoon, eat dinner at one long table, sleep in a bungalow with the forest outside, and go back across the bay by speedboat, about 15 minutes, the next day. You get the whole day on the water that a cruise gives you, a quieter night than any cabin, and a village that the ships only pass. Is an overnight cruise on Lan Ha Bay worth it?
Worth it if you have three days and want sunset and sunrise from a deck, or if you want the Ha Long half of the bay on one of the cross-bay routes. Not needed if your aim is caves, beaches and kayaking, which the day boat covers in one day, leaving you a night in the village instead of a cabin.
How much time do I need for Lan Ha Bay?
One full day on the water shows you the bay properly: 09:00–15:30 from Ben Beo, or until 20:00 with the night kayaking. Two days and one night is the minimum that makes sense for the island as a whole. An overnight cruise needs two to three days including the transfers at each end.
Which is better with kids, a day tour or a cruise?
The day tour. Children get the kayaking, the swimming and the fish farm without a night in a cabin, and they are on land by dinner. Children under 6 or under 1.2 m ride the bay free. Cruises accept children too, but check the ship’s minimum age and cabin layout, and think twice in July and August, when nights on the water are hot and stormy.
When is the best time for a boat trip on Lan Ha Bay?
October and November, then March and April: warm water, clear air, few cancellations. May to September has the warmest sea, 28–30°C, but also the storm warnings that close the bay to every boat. December to February is cool and misty, atmospheric from a deck and poor for swimming.
How do I book a Lan Ha Bay tour or cruise?
Send us your dates, group size and how many days you have, and we reply with the boat we would choose and the current rate. For the day tours a day’s notice is usually enough outside summer; cruise cabins on the May–August ships go early, so book those well ahead. Nothing is paid until you confirm, and there is no negotiating at the pier.
Are the boats on Lan Ha Bay safe?
Rules on inspections and sailing in bad weather tightened across northern Vietnam after 2025. No boat sails under a storm warning, ours included. Look for life jackets you can reach, a boat that is not overloaded and a crew that tells you the plan; our boat safety guide is a two-minute check you can do before boarding.
Do I need cash for a bay tour, and is there an ATM in Viet Hai?
Cat Ba town has ATMs; Viet Hai village has none, and many local boats and restaurants cannot take international cards. If your tour is booked through us the bay ticket is in the quote and nothing is paid on the boat. Withdraw in town before you cross; at the homestay we accept VND, USD and EUR, and cards carry a fee.
