Do you need kayaking experience in Lan Ha Bay?
Almost everyone who kayaks here has never kayaked before. The bay is enclosed by hundreds of limestone islands, which means there is very little swell and, on most days, very little wind. Two people in a sit-on-top kayak get the hang of it within a few minutes. Children ride in the middle with a parent at each end.
What does catch people out is not skill but stamina: an hour of paddling uses shoulders you have not used in years. Plan for shorter than you think on day one.

- Through-caves into hidden lagoons. Several karsts have tunnels at sea level that open into enclosed lagoons. They are only passable at certain tides, which is exactly why local guides earn their money.
- Floating fishing villages. Paddling quietly past a working village is a completely different experience from motoring past it.
- Empty beaches. Dozens of small sand coves on the karst islands are reachable only by kayak.
- Monkey Island and the shallows around it. Popular, but the water is spectacular.

What is night kayaking with bioluminescence like?
In the warm months — broadly May to October — the bay carries bioluminescent plankton that light up bright blue when disturbed. You paddle out after dark, stop, and drag a hand through the water. It is the single most surprising thing on offer here.
Two honest caveats: it needs a dark night, so avoid the days around a full moon, and the intensity varies week to week. Nobody can promise it. When it works, it is unforgettable.
Is kayaking in Lan Ha Bay safe?
- Wear the life jacket. Not around your waist. On.
- Stay inside the bay. Beyond the shelter of the islands, wind and swell build quickly.
