Hanoi to Cat Ba takes 3 to 3.5 hours in 2026 by door-to-door bus, and every crossing from the Hai Phong side now leaves from Dong Bai pier, not the old Got pier. The car ferry takes about 15 minutes, the passenger speedboat under 10, and from Cat Ba town it is another 15 minutes by speedboat across Lan Ha Bay to our village. We are the Lan family in Viet Hai, and we walk guests through this journey every week. Below is how it works right now, which option suits which traveller, and what the “health declaration” you may have read about actually means for you.

What changed in 2026: Dong Bai pier replaces Got pier
If you read about this route a year or two ago, forget Got pier. It has closed to tourist traffic, and all ferries and speedboats from the Hai Phong side now leave from Dong Bai pier, about 20 km east of the city centre, crossing to Cai Vieng wharf on Cat Ba. Two kinds of boat make the crossing.
- Car ferry. Roughly every 30 minutes, from about 05:30 to 18:30 in low season and longer hours in summer. About 15 minutes on the water. Foot passengers pay a few thousand dong; cars and motorbikes pay more. If you are travelling by bus, the bus drives on and you stay with it or stand on deck.
- Passenger speedboat. Under 10 minutes, passengers only, no vehicles. The difference to you is a few minutes and a slightly bumpier ride.
Timetables move with the season and around Vietnamese public holidays. Ask for the day’s schedule when you book, or ask us and we will check it for you.
Which way from Hanoi to Cat Ba is best?
Direct bus or limousine from the Old Quarter
This is what most of our guests do. A door-to-door ticket collects you at your Hanoi hotel, runs the expressway to Hai Phong in about 2 hours, crosses at Dong Bai and continues across the island to Cat Ba town, with a stop at Ben Beo harbour on request. Total time is 3 to 3.5 hours. The buses we book leave the Hanoi Old Quarter at 06:00 and 07:30, at 350,000 VND per person; other operators run later departures, but times shift by season, so confirm when you book. The 07:30 bus is the one to take if you want to be on the bay the same afternoon.
Private car to Dong Bai
About 2.5 hours from Hanoi to the pier on the Hanoi–Hai Phong expressway, at whatever hour suits you. You cross as foot passengers and a driver meets you on the island side. This is the right choice for families with luggage, for anyone landing at Noi Bai in the evening, and for groups of four or more who would rather not fit their timing to a bus.
Train or bus to Hai Phong, then a local transfer
The slow option: reach Hai Phong city by train or public bus, then a 25–30 minute taxi to Dong Bai pier and the crossing. Allow 4 to 5 hours overall and some patience at connections. Two things will change this route in the coming years: Cat Bi airport’s second terminal, due around 2027, and the new Lao Cai–Hanoi–Hai Phong railway, under construction since 19 December 2025 and due by 2030.
From the Ha Long side
Coming from Ha Long city, ferries cross from Tuan Chau to Gia Luan pier in the north of Cat Ba, then it is a road transfer to town. Since 20 April 2026 there is also a different way in: licensed cross-bay cruise routes that start in Ha Long Bay and finish in Lan Ha Bay, two of them at the entrance to our valley or at Viet Hai pier itself. From Ninh Binh
Direct buses link Tam Coc and Ninh Binh city with Cat Ba via Hai Phong, with typical departures at 07:00, 09:00, 10:00 and 12:00 — again, confirm when booking. Budget 4 to 6 hours door to door; the Ninh Binh–Hai Phong expressway is shortening the drive as sections open. The options are compared in Ninh Binh to Cat Ba Island.

Do I need a health declaration to enter Vietnam in 2026?
Not at the moment. Vietnam issued Decree 165/2026/ND-CP, effective 1 July 2026, which creates a legal framework for health declarations at border gates. The Ministry of Health has said the declaration is only switched on when a specific outbreak or public health emergency is announced; for ordinary travellers it is not in force. If it is ever activated, it can be completed online or on paper within 7 days before entry, in English or Vietnamese, through an official system that will be announced at the time. The old tokhaiyte.vn site is not used.

From the wharf to Viet Hai village
Cai Vieng wharf is 30–40 minutes by road from Cat Ba town, and our homestay is not in town. Viet Hai is a farming valley of 87 households and about 295 people on the far side of the island, inside Cat Ba National Park and facing Lan Ha Bay. No road links it to the rest of Cat Ba — not by regulation, but by geography; what vehicles exist stay in the valley. So the last leg is by water or on foot.
- Speedboat from Ben Beo harbour. About 15 minutes across Lan Ha Bay to Viet Hai pier. Ben Beo has no ticket office and no timetable — boats are arranged, not scheduled — so we book ours to meet your bus. The Lan Ha Bay ticket, 120,000 VND per adult and 60,000 VND per child, is a fixed state fee paid by everyone; children under 6 or under 1.2 m are free.
- Trek through the national park. Four to five hours over the ridge from the park’s main gate, roughly 9–12 km, steep in places. We send your luggage ahead by boat so you walk with a day pack.
From Viet Hai pier an electric cart takes you along the lane and through the hill to the village in about 10 minutes, 50,000 VND per person. Check-in runs 11:30–13:00, and there is no ATM in the village, so withdraw cash in Cat Ba town before you cross. Every route in, including the trek, is compared in how to get to Viet Hai village.

Going back to Hanoi
The return works in reverse. Buses from Cat Ba town to Hanoi typically leave at 12:30 and 16:00 — confirm when booking — and we time the speedboat from Viet Hai pier so the connection at Ben Beo is comfortable rather than a run. Flying out of Noi Bai the same evening? Tell us the flight time; the 12:30 bus is the safe one. In typhoon season we check the schedules daily, because a storm warning stops every boat on the bay, sometimes for a day and occasionally for three.

How long does it take from Hanoi to Cat Ba?
Three to three and a half hours by door-to-door bus or limousine: about 2 hours on the expressway to Hai Phong, the crossing at Dong Bai, then the road across the island to Cat Ba town. Add 30–40 minutes to Ben Beo harbour and about 15 minutes by speedboat if you are coming on to Viet Hai village.
Is Cat Ba worth it as a day trip from Hanoi?
Not really. Seven hours of travelling for a few hours on the island shows you the bay and nothing else. Two days and one night is the minimum that makes sense: the morning bus, a full day on Lan Ha Bay, a night in Viet Hai and the afternoon bus back the next day.
How do I book the bus from Hanoi to Cat Ba?
Any Old Quarter hotel or travel desk sells combo tickets, or we can book it for you as part of the transfer chain. Give a date, a pick-up address and the number of people. In June, July and August and around Vietnamese holidays, book two to three days ahead; the rest of the year a day is usually enough.
Can I do this journey with children or a lot of luggage?
Yes. The bus and ferry involve no walking, and on the boat routes your luggage rides with you. Families with pushchairs or several bags usually find a private car to Dong Bai easier than the bus, and the electric cart at Viet Hai pier takes bags as well as people. Only the trek across the park needs the luggage sent ahead.
What happens if my bus misses the ferry, or the weather is bad?
Ferries run roughly every half hour, so a missed sailing costs you 30 minutes. Bad weather is the bigger risk: a storm warning closes Lan Ha Bay to all boats, including our speedboat, though the Dong Bai car ferry usually keeps running. If your crossing to the village is cancelled we tell you as soon as we know and rearrange, rather than leave you at Ben Beo.
Is there an ATM on Cat Ba, and do I need cash?
Cat Ba town has ATMs; Viet Hai village has none, and many small restaurants and boat operators on the island cannot take international cards. Withdraw before you cross the bay. At the homestay we accept VND, USD and EUR; cards carry a fee.
Do I need a health declaration for Vietnam right now?
No. The framework introduced on 1 July 2026 is only activated during a declared outbreak or emergency, and no such activation applies to ordinary travellers as we write. Check official announcements a few days before you fly; nothing is required for the Hanoi–Cat Ba journey itself.
