Two days on Cat Ba is enough to see the bay. Three is enough to see the island. Five is enough to stop rushing. The mistake most people make is not the length — it is spending all of it in Cat Ba town, which is currently a building site, and treating the bay as a single day trip. Here are three itineraries that put the nights in the right places.

Where should you stay on Cat Ba Island?
Cat Ba town is in the middle of a large reclamation and construction project. Parts of the seafront are fenced and noisy by day. The town still works as a base, but it is noisier and less pleasant than the blogs from three years ago suggest.
The alternative is to sleep on the far side of the island in Viet Hai, a village with no road in and no through traffic, reached by boat. Most of the itineraries below assume at least one night there, because that is the part people remember.

What can you do on Cat Ba Island in 3 days?
The version we would pick. One night in the village, one flexible.
- Day 1 — Travel in, full-day bay boat, arrive Viet Hai late afternoon. Dinner in the village.
- Day 2 — Morning: Navy Peak, three hours return, 360-degree view over both bays. Afternoon: kayak from the village or swim off a quiet beach. Evening: if it falls near a new moon, bioluminescent kayaking.
- Day 3 — Either boat back and spend the afternoon in the national park, or stay in the valley and leave after lunch.
What can you do on Cat Ba Island in 5 days?
Enough to do the island properly and still have a slow day.
- Day 1 — Travel in. Bay boat as the transfer. Night in Viet Hai.
- Day 2 — Navy Peak in the morning, kayaking in the afternoon.
- Day 3 — Walk out through Cat Ba National Park, four to five hours, luggage forwarded by boat. Night in Cat Ba town or back in the village.
- Day 4 — Beaches and Hospital Cave, or a second bay day going further out to the quieter water and the beaches on the outer islands.
- Day 5 — Slow morning, travel out.
Build one spare half-day into any itinerary between June and September. Storm warnings stop boats leaving, and a five-day plan with no slack becomes a four-day plan with an argument in it.

What should you skip on Cat Ba Island?
- A Ha Long Bay day trip from Cat Ba. You are already in a bay that looks the same and has a fifth of the boats.
- Monkey Island, unless you specifically want macaques. They are aggressive around food.
- The town beaches in July and August, which are busy and partly fenced by construction.
- Squeezing the national park into a half day. Either give it most of a day or leave it out.

Is one night enough?
For the bay, yes. For the island, no. One night means you see the water and nothing else.
Should I base myself in the town or the village?
The village if you want quiet, walking and the bay. The town if you want restaurants, bars and easy onward transport. Many people do one night of each.
Can I do this without booking tours?
Partly. Walking, cycling and beaches are all independent. The bay itself needs a boat, and the boat needs arranging.
How does Cat Ba fit into a longer Vietnam trip?
It sits naturally between Hanoi and Ninh Binh, or between Hanoi and Sapa. Two to three nights is the usual slot.
What is the single best day?
Boat out in the morning, Navy Peak in the afternoon, hotpot at the long table, night paddle if the moon is right.
When is the best time for a Cat Ba itinerary?
October and November: dry, 24–29°C, calm seas and the summer crowd gone, so every day in these plans works as written. March and April come next. From June to September add a spare half-day, because a storm warning stops every boat, and avoid the 30 April, 2 September and Tet weeks if you want the island quiet.
Do these itineraries work with children?
The two- and three-day plans do: the bay day involves no walking, children under six or under 1.2 m ride the bay free, and the Viet Hai valley is flat enough to cycle from about age six. Swap Navy Peak for the Tien Duc cave walk or the fish stream with young children, and leave the trek across the park for teenagers and adults.
Do I need cash for these plans?
Yes. The bay ticket, park fees, the cart and bicycles are paid in cash, there is no ATM in Viet Hai, and many local boats and restaurants cannot take international cards. Withdraw in Cat Ba town before crossing. At the homestay you can pay the room by card with a 3% bank fee; every bill carries 7% tax from 1 January 2026.
