Ten days is enough to see northern Vietnam properly if you stop in four places and stop moving after that. The version below is Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Cat Ba and Sapa, with two nights minimum in each and one spare day built in for weather. It is not the fastest possible route — it is the one that leaves you rested instead of wrecked, which is what most people actually want by day eight.
What does a 10-day northern Vietnam route look like?

Reverse it if you are flying out of Hanoi and want the mountains first. Do not try to add Ha Giang unless you cut something.
Days 1–2: Hanoi
Two nights, no more. Long-haul arrivals lose most of day one anyway. Walk, eat, get a local SIM or eSIM, and book onward transport before you leave.
Days 3–4: Ninh Binh
Hire a bicycle and ride between the temples, caves and river valleys. Two nights is enough. The Ninh Binh-Hai Phong expressway is under construction and its Ninh Binh section is targeted to open during 2026, which will shorten the onward drive towards the coast — see our Ninh Binh to Cat Ba guide.
Days 5–7: Cat Ba and Lan Ha Bay
This is where the itinerary earns its three nights. Arrive on a bay boat rather than treating the transfer as transport — you spend the day kayaking and swimming and step off at Viet Hai, a village with no road in and no through traffic, instead of going back to a hotel.
- Day 5 — Travel in, full-day boat through Lan Ha Bay, night in the village
- Day 6 — Navy Peak in the morning, kayaking in the afternoon, night paddle if the moon is right
- Day 7 — Walk out through Cat Ba National Park with your bags sent ahead by boat, or take the boat and travel on

Days 8–10: Sapa
Long transfer — see Sapa to Cat Ba for the routes in reverse. Two nights minimum, three if you want a proper walk between villages. Sapa is cooler than everywhere else on this list; in winter it is a 10°C difference from the coast.
What should you do with a spare day in northern Vietnam?
Put it at Cat Ba. Between June and September, bad-weather warnings stop boats being cleared to leave harbour, and a ten-day plan with no slack becomes a nine-day plan with a lost booking. Outside storm season it is the day you use to do nothing, which by day seven you will want.
What should you skip on a 10-day Vietnam trip?
- A Ha Long Bay day trip if you are already going to Lan Ha. Same karsts, a fifth of the boats.
- Ha Giang, unless you drop Sapa. Four days minimum on its own.
- Overnight buses between every stop. One is character-building. Three is a bad holiday.
- One-night stops. Every one-night stop costs you a travel day at each end.
What should you know before a 10-day northern Vietnam trip?
- Visa first. Some passports are exempt, others need an e-visa — see our visa guide.
- Pack for two climates. Sapa is cold in winter; the coast is not.
- Cash. No ATM in Viet Hai, and card acceptance is patchy outside the cities.
- Do not book a same-day flight out after the island. Boats and weather do not care about your schedule.
- Book Cat Ba accommodation ahead in June to August. There are only 15 rooms in our whole homestay.

Is ten days enough for northern Vietnam?
For four places at a civilised pace, yes. For five or six places, no.

October and November: dry on the coast, clear in the mountains, warm enough to swim.
Can I do it without booking tours?
Mostly. The bay needs a boat and the boat needs arranging; everything else can be done independently.
What if I only have seven days?
Drop Sapa. Hanoi, Ninh Binh and Cat Ba fits seven days comfortably.
Where should the spare day go?
Cat Ba, for weather. Second choice, Hanoi at the end for flight flexibility.
