Viet Hai is the only village on Cat Ba Island you cannot drive to. There is no road in — you arrive by boat across Lan Ha Bay, or you walk in over the mountain through Cat Ba National Park. From Ben Beo Harbour on Cat Ba Island the speedboat crossing takes about 10 minutes; from Hanoi, door to door, plan on 5 to 7 hours depending on which route you take. This is every option, with the parts nobody puts in writing.
Why is there no road to Viet Hai?
The village sits in a bowl of limestone on the far side of the island, ringed by national park on three sides and the bay on the fourth. Building a road would mean cutting through protected forest, so it was never built. About 87 households live here, fewer than 300 people in total. No road links the valley to the rest of Cat Ba, so there is no through traffic: people move around on bicycles and a handful of electric carts. That is geography, not a rule. Phone signal is weak, and there is no ATM anywhere in the village.

How do I get to Viet Hai if I am already on Cat Ba Island?
Go to Ben Beo Harbour, about 2 km east of Cat Ba town. A speedboat crosses to Viet Hai pier in roughly ten minutes. Two fixed costs apply on top of the boat itself and they are the same for everyone: the Lan Ha Bay entrance ticket is 120,000 VND per person, and the electric cart from Viet Hai pier into the village is 50,000 VND per person. Children under six do not pay the bay ticket.
The pier is not a terminal. There is no ticket window, no departure board and no queue system — it is a working harbour full of fishing boats. If you have not arranged the crossing in advance you will be negotiating on the dock, in Vietnamese, with whoever is free. Most guests find it easier to tell us their arrival time and let us have a boat waiting.
Can I make the journey part of the trip?
Yes, and for most people this is the better answer. Instead of treating the crossing as transport, take a full-day boat through Lan Ha Bay that finishes at Viet Hai pier in the late afternoon. You spend the day kayaking, swimming and eating lunch on the water, then step off at the village instead of going back to town. Same day, same distance, entirely different experience.
There is a sunset version that stays out later, has dinner on the boat and includes night kayaking through bioluminescent plankton before dropping you at the village around eight in the evening. It only works properly on dark nights near the new moon — tell us your dates and we will say honestly whether they line up.
Rates for both move with the season and the group size, so we do not publish a number that would be wrong by the time you read it. Message us with your dates and we will send the current one.
What about arriving from Hanoi or the airport?
Two things have changed recently and both are worth knowing. The Ninh Binh-Hai Phong expressway is under construction; the Ninh Binh section is targeted to open during 2026 and the Hai Phong section in 2027. No part of it is open yet, so allow the current road times. And Cat Bi Airport in Hai Phong is building a second terminal, due around 2027, which will make flying in far more practical than it is today.
For now, the simplest door-to-door option is a private transfer: a car meets you at Noi Bai Airport or in Hai Phong, crosses on the Got ferry, drives across Cat Ba Island to Ben Beo, and hands you to the boat. Every ticket and connection is arranged in advance, which matters most when you land late or travel with small children and luggage. Can I walk in through the national park?
You can, and it is the most rewarding arrival if you are fit and travelling light. From the main national park gate the trail runs past the Bat Cave and Frog Pond, over the ridge and down into the Viet Hai valley — four to five hours of walking, steep and slippery in places. It is not suitable for small children, for anyone unsteady on their feet, or for anyone dragging a wheeled suitcase.
The practical trick is to send your bags ahead. Luggage can be dropped in Cat Ba town and forwarded to the village by boat for 350,000 VND, so you walk with a day pack. Start before 8:00 — the midday sun on the exposed sections is brutal — and carry at least 1.5 litres of water per person. Park entry at the main gate is 160,000 VND for adults and 80,000 VND for children. Two of the marked routes are cheaper: the Ninh Tiep and Phu Long routes are 80,000 VND for adults, and the Kim Giao–Ngu Lam–Trung Trang route is 120,000 VND.

What happens when you actually arrive
The pier is a concrete jetty with a few boats tied to it and an electric cart waiting. The cart takes about eight minutes to reach the village along a flat lane between rice fields and buffalo. Check-in at Lan Homestay runs from 11:30 to 13:00; if you are on the sunset boat and arriving at night, we know, and someone will be up.
Bicycles are free for guests to use and the whole valley is flat, so most people are out on one within an hour. Dinner is served at one long table — you eat with whoever else is staying, which is how half the friendships in our guest book started. Seafood hotpot and BBQ need a day’s notice; something quick takes about twenty minutes.
Practical notes
- Cash before you come. No ATM in the village. VND, USD and EUR accepted; cards carry a 3% fee.
- Download offline maps. Mobile signal is weak in the valley. Wi-Fi works in the rooms and common areas.
- Bay ticket 120,000 VND per person, electric cart 50,000 VND per person, both unavoidable and both fixed.
- Under-sixes travel free on the bay ticket.
- Book two to three days ahead in June to August. There are only 15 rooms in the whole homestay.
- Dogs are welcome. So are the village ones, who will find you.
Common questions
Can I visit Viet Hai as a day trip?
Most people arrive on a day boat, walk around for an hour and leave. You will see the village but not the part worth coming for — the evening, when the day boats have gone and the valley goes quiet. If you can spare one night, spend it here.
Is there a road being built?
No. The surrounding land is national park and the village is inside the Ha Long Bay-Cat Ba Archipelago UNESCO World Heritage area, inscribed in 2023 as an extension of the Ha Long Bay site listed in 1994. The absence of a road is the reason the place still feels the way it does.
What if my boat is cancelled because of weather?
It happens, mostly between June and September. The port authority does not clear tourist boats to leave when a bad-weather warning is in force, so crossings are cancelled outright rather than attempted. If a crossing is cancelled we will tell you as early as we know and help you rearrange rather than leave you on the dock.
How much luggage can I bring?
On the boat routes, as much as you like. On the trek, a day pack — send the rest ahead by boat.
Do I need to speak Vietnamese?
