Cat Ba is one of the best-value destinations in northern Vietnam, but almost every blog quotes prices from three years ago. We live here, we buy here, and we book boats for guests every week — so here is what things genuinely cost in 2026, in Vietnamese dong, with the traps that quietly double your budget.
The short answer
A comfortable independent trip on Cat Ba runs roughly a modest daily budget including a private room, three meals, and one activity. Backpacking on dorm beds and street food, you can do it on 350,000–450,000 VND. Booking everything through a hotel desk in Cat Ba town, you will pay double.
Getting to Cat Ba

The trap: agents in Hanoi’s Old Quarter sell “Cat Ba transfer + cruise” packages at three to four times the separate cost. Buy your transport, then book activities on the island.
Where you sleep

- Village homestay with private bathroom: a fair village rate that usually includes breakfast — ask for the current one

Rates rise sharply from early June to late August and during Vietnamese public holidays. December to March is the cheapest window, and the island is beautiful in the mist.
Eating well for very little
- Banh mi: 15,000–25,000 VND
- Bowl of pho or bun: 35,000–50,000 VND
- Rice plate at a local quan: 40,000–70,000 VND
- Fresh beer (bia hoi): 10,000–20,000 VND a glass
- Seafood dinner at a waterfront restaurant: 200,000–450,000 VND per person
Seafood is where budgets break. Prices on the tourist strip are often quoted per kilogram live weight, and the bill lands far above what people expected. Ask the price per kilo before the fish goes in the pot, and check whether the number includes cooking.

The single best value on the island is the full-day boat tour. For roughly the price of one restaurant dinner you get eight hours on the water, swimming stops, kayaking and lunch. Compare that with an overnight Ha Long Bay cruise at several million dong.
Six ways to cut costs without cutting the trip
- Book transport and activities separately. Bundles from Hanoi carry the biggest markup on the island.
- Travel in the shoulder months. Late September to November has the best weather of the year and rates well below August.
- Stay outside the town centre. Rooms are cheaper, and in 2026 the Cat Ba Central Bay construction means the waterfront is noisy and dusty anyway.
- Eat where the boat crews eat. Small family places one street back from the promenade cost half the seafront price.
- Rent a bicycle instead of a motorbike for short distances. Ours cost 30,000 VND for the whole day.
- Carry cash. Card acceptance is patchy outside the town, and ATMs in the village are non-existent.

Staying with us in Viet Hai
Lan Homestay is a family-run guesthouse in Viet Hai village, inside Cat Ba National Park. We have thatched-roof garden bungalows and mountain-view rooms, all with private bathrooms, at a fair village rate — message us for the current one.
Bicycle hire is 30,000 VND per bike for the whole day (a little over one US dollar). No road links our valley to the rest of the island, so there is no through traffic — most guests only understand what that means once they are riding it.
Evenings here are a family dinner: one long table, everyone staying that night eating together — garden vegetables, island seafood, our own herbs. If you would rather eat on your own schedule, our quick-food menu is available all day with 20 minutes’ notice. For something special — seafood hotpot or a seafood BBQ — tell us one day in advance so we can buy fresh from the boats that morning.
We also arrange what is awkward to organise from abroad: boat transfers from Cat Ba town or Ben Beo pier, full-day Lan Ha Bay boat tours, kayaking, night kayaking to see bioluminescent plankton in the warm months, and guided treks in the national park.
