Ninh Binh or Cat Ba: Which If You Only Have Time for One

Group kayaking through a limestone lagoon in Lan Ha Bay

Pick Ninh Binh if you want river karst and temples reachable by bicycle; pick Cat Ba if you want the same limestone rising out of the sea, kayaking and a night in a village with no road — and if you have four days, do both in that order. We are the Lan family in Viet Hai, a fishing and farming village inside the Cat Ba archipelago, and “Ninh Binh or Cat Ba?” is one of the questions we are asked most by guests planning a short trip from Hanoi. Most of our guests arrive straight from Ninh Binh, so we hear both sides of the story every week. Here is the honest comparison.

The real difference: rivers or sea

Ninh Binh and Cat Ba are built from the same kind of limestone. The difference is what surrounds it. In Ninh Binh the karst towers stand in rice fields and are threaded by slow rivers; you see them from a rowing boat at Trang An or Tam Coc, from the 500-odd steps up to Hang Mua viewpoint, or from a bicycle on the flat lanes between villages. Temples and pagodas, including the old capital at Hoa Lu, are part of almost every day there.

Around Cat Ba the same towers rise straight out of the sea. Lan Ha Bay, on the south-east side of the island, holds around 358 limestone islands and has been part of the Ha Long Bay–Cat Ba World Heritage site since 16 September 2023. You see it from a kayak, from a small boat between floating fish farms, from a quiet beach, or from the top of Navy Peak above our village. Cat Ba also has a large national park — 17,360 hectares of forest — that you can trek across to reach Viet Hai.

So the honest question is not which place is more beautiful. It is whether you want a land trip with water in it, or a water trip with land in it.

Two things in that table matter more than they look. First, the bay is weather-dependent. On most days of the year boats run normally, but when the harbour office stops boats for wind, nobody goes out — we explain how that works in our typhoon season guide. Second, Cat Ba needs more time simply because getting here takes longer, so one night is too short to enjoy it.

When Ninh Binh is the better choice

  • You only have one or two nights. Ninh Binh is closer to Hanoi and works well as a short break.
  • You like cycling on flat ground. The lanes around Tam Coc are among the easiest rides in northern Vietnam.
  • Temples and history matter to you. Hoa Lu and the pagodas are part of the landscape there.
  • You are travelling in a stormy week. A rowing boat on a river is far less affected by wind than a day on the open bay.

When Cat Ba is the better choice

  • You want to be on the water, not just look at it. Paddling into a lagoon in Lan Ha Bay is something Ninh Binh cannot give you — see our kayaking guide for beginners.
  • You want quiet. Lan Ha Bay carries a fraction of the boat traffic of Ha Long Bay; we compare the two in Lan Ha Bay vs Ha Long Bay.
  • You want a night somewhere different. Viet Hai has no road from Cat Ba town; you arrive by boat or on foot, and the evenings are dark and still. Read what a night in a village without a road is like.
  • You like hiking. The national park and Navy Peak give you forest and sea views in the same morning.

Doing both: the order that works

If you have four days or more, do both, and do them in this order: Hanoi → Ninh Binh → Cat Ba → Hanoi. Ninh Binh is the easier first stop after Hanoi, and the direct bus from Ninh Binh to Cat Ba saves you a trip back to the capital. Doing it the other way round means arriving in Ninh Binh already relaxed and then cycling in the heat, which works but is a different trip.

Days Suggested plan
2 days Choose one. Ninh Binh is the safer pick for a two-day trip from Hanoi.
3 days One night in Ninh Binh, two nights in Viet Hai — or three nights on Cat Ba if the sea is your priority.
4 days One or two nights in Ninh Binh, then two nights in Viet Hai with a full day on Lan Ha Bay.
5 days or more Two nights in Ninh Binh, three in Viet Hai: one bay day, one hiking or cycling day, one spare day for weather.

The bus from Ninh Binh drops you in Cat Ba, and the last leg is the speedboat from Ben Beo pier: about 15 minutes on the water, then about 10 minutes by electric cart to the house — 25–30 minutes in all. The full route, with times and what to book, is in our Ninh Binh to Cat Ba guide, and a day-by-day plan is in our Cat Ba itinerary for 2, 3 or 5 days. If your route is longer, our 10-day northern Vietnam itinerary shows where both fit.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Answered by the Lan family in Viet Hai — the people who arrange the bus, run the boats and pick you up at the pier.

Is Ninh Binh better than Cat Ba?

Neither is better; they are different. Ninh Binh is limestone in rice fields and rivers, best seen by rowing boat and bicycle. Cat Ba is limestone in the sea, best seen by kayak and boat. If you want temples and easy cycling, choose Ninh Binh. If you want to be on the water and spend a night somewhere quiet, choose Cat Ba.

How many days do I need for Ninh Binh and Cat Ba together?

Four days is the comfortable minimum: one or two nights in Ninh Binh and two nights on Cat Ba. With five days you can add a spare day on Cat Ba in case wind stops the boats.

Which is easier to reach from Hanoi?

Ninh Binh. It is about 2 hours by road. Cat Ba takes 3–3.5 hours by bus and ferry via Dong Bai pier, and Viet Hai adds a short speedboat and electric cart ride from Ben Beo pier.

Can I go from Ninh Binh to Cat Ba without going back to Hanoi?

Yes. Direct bus-and-ferry services run from Ninh Binh and Tam Coc to Cat Ba, roughly 180 km and about five hours. The buses we book pick you up at your hotel in Ninh Binh or Tam Coc at 7:00, 9:00 or 13:30; going the other way, they leave Ben Beo pier for Ninh Binh hotels at 9:00, 12:30 and 16:00 (times checked October 2026). We can book it for you and meet the bus with the boat at Ben Beo.
