Ninh Binh to Cat Ba is roughly 180 km and takes four to six hours depending on how you break it. There is no direct public route that does the whole thing — every option involves a change in Hai Phong or a transfer bus, and then a ferry. The Ninh Binh–Hai Phong expressway opening through 2026 is shortening the road section significantly, which makes this pairing far more sensible than it used to be. Here is how it actually works.

Why pair Ninh Binh with Cat Ba at all?
Because they are the same landscape in two states. Ninh Binh is limestone karst rising out of rice paddies and rivers; Lan Ha Bay is the same limestone rising out of the sea. Doing both, back to back, is one of the better two-stop combinations in northern Vietnam — and it lets you skip a return to Hanoi in between, which is the usual waste of half a day.
How do you get from Ninh Binh to Cat Ba Island?
| Route | Time | Changes | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tourist transfer bus (through ticket) | 5–6 hrs | Usually 1–2, handled for you | Most people |
| Private car all the way | 4–4.5 hrs | None until the ferry | Families, early flights, heavy bags |
| Local bus to Hai Phong, then Cat Ba | 6–7 hrs | 2–3, on your own | Budget travellers with time |
| Train to Hai Phong via Hanoi, then ferry | 7–8 hrs | 2–3 | People who like trains more than time |
What is the Ninh Binh to Cat Ba through ticket?
The standard product is a combined bus-and-ferry ticket sold from Ninh Binh and Tam Coc. Expect roughly 280,000 to 550,000 VND per person depending on whether it is a 16-seat van or a limousine, and it typically leaves in the morning. Prices move with the season, so treat that as a range rather than a quote. You are picked up, driven to the ferry port, put on the crossing, and picked up again on the island side.
Two things to check before you pay: whether the ticket covers the ferry or only the road sections, and where in Cat Ba you are dropped. The bus station has moved out to Duong 365, about 500 metres from the pier area, and being dropped somewhere you did not expect with luggage is the usual complaint.

Getting here is the part most guests worry about. Tell us your arrival city and date and we will put the whole chain together — bus, boat and the cart from the pier — and meet you at Viet Hai. See how the transfer works, or just send us the dates.
How does the new expressway change the journey?
The Ninh Binh-Hai Phong expressway (CT.08, 117 km) is under construction. The 25.3 km Ninh Binh section is targeted to open during 2026; the 7.5 km Hai Phong section broke ground in early 2026 and is due in 2027. None of it is open yet. When it is, the road time drops noticeably and a private car becomes the clearly fastest way to do this trip.
Separately, the second terminal at Cat Bi Airport in Hai Phong is due around 2027, which will eventually make flying into Hai Phong and driving out to the island a real alternative to the Hanoi route.
How do you get to the far side of Cat Ba Island?
Every route above ends in Cat Ba town. If you are staying in Viet Hai there is one more leg — a boat from Ben Beo Harbour, about 30 minutes across the water, then an electric cart into the village.
Two fixed costs apply: the Lan Ha Bay entrance ticket at 120,000 VND per person and the electric cart at 50,000 VND per person. Ben Beo has no ticket window and no timetable, so arranging the crossing in advance is the difference between a half-hour transfer and an hour of negotiating on a working fishing dock. Our full breakdown is in how to get to Viet Hai Village.

Which direction is better?
Ninh Binh first, then Cat Ba. Ninh Binh is dense, busy and best done on a bicycle in two days; Cat Ba is where you slow down. Doing it the other way round means arriving in Ninh Binh already relaxed and then cycling 40 km in the heat, which is a different experience.
What should you know before travelling Ninh Binh to Cat Ba?
- Leave Ninh Binh in the morning. Ferry frequency drops in the afternoon and drops further in winter.
- Storm season is June to September. If a warning is issued, the crossing does not run at all. Do not plan a same-day onward flight.
- Withdraw cash before you leave the mainland. There is no ATM in Viet Hai and card acceptance on the island is patchy.
- Motion sickness: the ferry is short but can be choppy from October to March. Take something beforehand if you are prone.
- Two nights minimum on Cat Ba, or the journey eats the trip. See our 2, 3 and 5 day itineraries.

Frequently asked questions
Answered by the Lan family in Viet Hai — the people who run the boats, cook the dinner and pick you up at the pier.
Is there a direct bus from Ninh Binh to Cat Ba?
Not a single vehicle the whole way — the ferry makes that impossible. What you can buy is a single through ticket that handles the changes for you.
How much should it cost?
Roughly 280,000 to 550,000 VND per person depending on the vehicle. A private car is priced per vehicle and works out better for three or more people.
Can I do it in a day and still see the bay?
If you leave Ninh Binh at 7:00 you can be on the island by early afternoon, but the bay itself needs a full day. Arrive, sleep, go out on the water the next morning.
What about going the other way, Cat Ba to Ninh Binh?
Same routes in reverse. Leave the island in the morning; afternoon ferries plus afternoon traffic into Ninh Binh make for a long day.
Does the expressway mean I can drive myself?
You can, but a foreign licence is not valid in Vietnam without the right permit, and the ferry with a hire car is more complicated than it is worth for two nights.
