The order that wastes the least time is Hanoi → Sapa → Hanoi → Ninh Binh → Cat Ba → Hanoi, because the Ninh Binh–Cat Ba bus-and-ferry route exists and the Sapa–Cat Ba journey is a full day. We are the Lan family in Viet Hai, a village inside the Cat Ba archipelago, and many of our guests arrive halfway through exactly this loop. The ones who planned the order well arrive rested. The ones who tried to go straight from the mountains to the sea usually arrive late at night, tired, and lose a day. This guide shows the three orders that work, what each costs you in hours on the road, and which one we would choose.
| Best order | Hanoi → Sapa → Hanoi → Ninh Binh → Cat Ba → Hanoi |
| Hanoi to Sapa | About 5–6 hours by expressway bus, or an overnight train to Lao Cai plus about an hour by road |
| Hanoi to Ninh Binh | About 2 hours by road |
| Ninh Binh to Cat Ba | Roughly 180 km, four to six hours by bus and ferry |
| Hanoi to Cat Ba | 3–3.5 hours by bus and ferry via Dong Bai pier |
| Sapa to Cat Ba direct | About 400 km; no option under nine hours |
| Minimum for all four | About 8–9 nights |

The logic: Hanoi is the hub, except for one shortcut
Look at a map and the four places form a rough cross with Hanoi in the middle. Sapa is in the mountains to the north-west, Ninh Binh is to the south, and Cat Ba is to the east, across the water from Hai Phong. Almost every bus and train in the region runs through Hanoi, which is why most routes look like a star: out from the capital, back, out again.
There is one useful exception. Bus companies run a combined bus-and-ferry ticket from Ninh Binh and Tam Coc straight to Cat Ba, so you do not need to go back to Hanoi between the two. That shortcut is what decides the order. Sapa sits alone on its own branch, so you visit it as an out-and-back from Hanoi, and you link Ninh Binh and Cat Ba together on the way.
The detail of each connection is in our Sapa to Cat Ba guide, our Ninh Binh to Cat Ba guide and our Hanoi to Cat Ba guide.
Three orders that work, compared
| Order | Time on the road | Nights | Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A. Hanoi → Sapa → Hanoi → Ninh Binh → Cat Ba → Hanoi | About 19–23 hours in five legs | 8–10 | Uses the Ninh Binh–Cat Ba shortcut; ends with the sea and a short, predictable last leg to Hanoi | Two Sapa legs through Hanoi; Sapa first can be cold and wet early in the year |
| B. Hanoi → Ninh Binh → Cat Ba → Hanoi → Sapa → Hanoi | About 19–23 hours in five legs | 8–10 | Same shortcut; easy first stop after a long flight | Ends with a 5–6 hour mountain road the day before many flights; Sapa weather is harder to fit around a fixed end date |
| C. Hanoi → Sapa → Cat Ba → Ninh Binh → Hanoi | About 20 hours or more in four legs, one of them nine hours or longer | 8–10 | No back-tracking on paper | Sapa–Cat Ba is a full travel day of nine hours or more; you arrive on Cat Ba exhausted and lose a day |
Orders A and B spend about the same hours on the road. The reason we prefer A is the ending. Cat Ba to Hanoi is a short, regular route of 3–3.5 hours, so it is easy to time before an evening flight. Sapa is the stop most affected by mountain weather — fog and rain can close views for days in winter — so we would rather put it early, when there is still room to move a day. Order C looks tidy on a map but trades a night’s sleep for a day in a bus.
How many nights for each stop
| Stop | Minimum | Comfortable | What the extra night gives you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hanoi | 1 | 2 | Recovery from the flight and the Old Quarter at night |
| Sapa | 2 | 3 | A full day of walking between villages, and a weather buffer |
| Ninh Binh | 1 | 2 | Both Trang An and Tam Coc by boat, plus cycling |
| Cat Ba / Viet Hai | 2 | 3 | One day on Lan Ha Bay, one day hiking or cycling, and a spare day if wind stops the boats |
With fewer than eight nights we would drop one stop rather than rush all four. If you have to choose between Ninh Binh and Cat Ba, our guide to Ninh Binh or Cat Ba helps you decide. For a full day-by-day plan with all four, see our 10-day northern Vietnam itinerary.
Can you go straight from Sapa to Cat Ba?
You can, but it is rarely worth it. The distance is about 400 km and there is no way to do it in under nine hours. The usual way is a night bus or train into Hanoi and a morning transfer out to Cat Ba, which means a broken night and a long day. A new Lao Cai–Hanoi–Hai Phong railway is under construction and will one day connect the Sapa side directly to Hai Phong, but it is not running yet. Until it does, we suggest one night in Hanoi between Sapa and the coast.
If you only have time for the coast after Sapa, skip Ninh Binh and go Hanoi → Cat Ba; the route is in our Hanoi to Cat Ba guide.
The last leg: from Cat Ba to Viet Hai
Whichever order you choose, the bus drops you on Cat Ba Island and the last stretch to our house is by water. From Ben Beo pier it is about 15 minutes by speedboat, then about 10 minutes by electric cart — 25–30 minutes in all. There is no road into Viet Hai, so you either take the boat or trek through the national park. Our Ben Beo harbour guide explains the pier, and what to pack for Cat Ba covers the bag you want for a boat transfer.
Send us your arrival and departure dates and where you are coming from. We will tell you honestly which order fits, book the bus from Ninh Binh or Hanoi to Cat Ba, meet you with the speedboat at Ben Beo, and plan your bay day around the forecast. Everything we run is on our tours page and the transfers are on our transport page; rates move with the season and the size of the group, so message us.
Frequently asked questions
Answered by the Lan family in Viet Hai — the people who book the buses, run the boats and pick you up at the pier.
Can I go directly from Sapa to Cat Ba?
Yes, but it takes nine hours or more, usually as a night bus or train into Hanoi followed by a transfer to Cat Ba the same morning. Most travellers are better off spending one night in Hanoi in between.
Should I do Cat Ba before or after Ninh Binh?
After. Ninh Binh is about 2 hours from Hanoi, and the bus-and-ferry route from Ninh Binh to Cat Ba saves you going back to the capital. Ending on Cat Ba also gives you a short, predictable 3–3.5 hour trip back to Hanoi.
How many nights for each stop?
At least one in Hanoi, two in Sapa, one in Ninh Binh and two on Cat Ba — about eight nights in total. Three nights on Cat Ba gives you a spare day in case wind stops the boats.
Is it worth doing all four in one week?
Only if you are happy to spend a large part of the week travelling. With seven nights or fewer, we would choose three stops and enjoy them.
