With three nights, two in Viet Hai and one in Cat Ba town covers both — the village for the bay, the trek and the quiet, the town for the beaches and an early ferry. It is the question we are asked most often, usually phrased as “should we split our stay?”, and the honest answer depends on how many nights you have and what you want your last morning to look like. Below is how we actually plan it for guests, including the cases where splitting is a waste of a day.
At a glance
| Three nights, best split | Two in Viet Hai, one in Cat Ba town |
| Two nights | Both in one place — splitting costs you a half day |
| Between the two | Boat from Ben Beo, about 15 minutes |
| Harbour to our door | Electric cart, 50,000 VND per person each way, about 10 minutes |
| Village | Viet Hai, 87 households, no road in, 15 rooms with us, breakfast included |
| Town is better for | Beaches, restaurants, an early ferry or flight |

The two places are not variations of each other
Cat Ba town is a small seaside town: a strip of hotels along the water, three beaches within walking distance, restaurants that stay open late, scooters for hire, and the harbours that every boat leaves from. It is where you sleep if you want dinner choices and a short taxi to the ferry in the morning. It is also, in 2026, a building site in places — we are blunt about which streets in our note on Cat Ba construction and where to stay.
Viet Hai is the other end of the island and the other end of the experience: 87 households in a valley ringed by limestone, reached only by boat, with the national park at its back door. There is no beach and no nightlife. What there is instead is quiet, a working village rather than a resort strip, and the shortest access to the trek and the bay. Our fuller comparison sits in where to stay on Cat Ba Island, and one day in Viet Hai shows what a single day here looks like hour by hour.
Because they are different in kind, the split is not about hedging. It is about giving each one the amount of time it needs.
How many nights, and how to divide them
| Nights | How we split it | What each part is for | Moving between |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Don’t split | Town if you arrived late and leave early; village if you came for the bay | Not applicable |
| 2 | Both in Viet Hai | Day one the bay, day two the trek or the village and the hills | One boat in, one boat out |
| 3 | Two Viet Hai, one town, village first | Village: bay tour, trek, village dinner. Town: beach afternoon, restaurants, early start the next day | Boat to Ben Beo on the morning of night three |
| 4 | Three Viet Hai, one town | Adds a slow day in the village — cycling, the fish farms, a second bay trip | Same, one crossing |
| 5 or more | Four or more Viet Hai, one town at the end | Village becomes the base; town is the exit buffer | Same, one crossing |

Two nights is the case people get wrong most often. Splitting two nights means one night in each place, which in practice means half of one day spent packing, boating and checking in again. You see less of both. If you only have two nights, pick one — and if the bay and the trek are why you came to Cat Ba at all, that one is the village. The day-count logic for longer trips is laid out in our 2, 3 and 5 day Cat Ba itineraries.
Village first, town last — and why that order
When you do split, put the village first. Three reasons, all practical.
The boat leg is weather-sensitive. If the bay is rough on your arrival day you can shuffle the village nights; if it is rough on your departure day and you still have a ferry or a flight to catch, you have a problem. Getting the crossing done early removes that risk. The mechanics of that leg are in how to get to Viet Hai village and the Ben Beo harbour guide.
The village days are the ones with fixed ingredients. A full day on Lan Ha Bay runs on the tide and the weather; the trek from the national park gate is 9 to 12 kilometres and four to five hours, so it needs a whole day and a dry one. Town days are flexible — a beach and a restaurant work in any weather and at any hour. Put the rigid days first.
And the last morning matters. From town you are twenty minutes from the ferry and can make an early departure without drama. From the village you are a boat ride plus a drive plus a crossing, which is fine with a late flight and tight with an early one.
What actually fills the days
In the village: the bay, which is the main event — 358 islands in Lan Ha, and the complete Lan Ha Bay guide covers what is worth seeing. The Navy Peak hike is 259 metres and about three hours there and back, which makes it a good half day. Cycling the valley costs 30,000 VND a day for a bicycle. Dinner is the thing guests remember — see what to eat in Viet Hai and the village family dinner.
In town: the beaches, a long dinner, and the harbour at dusk. One night is enough for all three. Whether the season makes the beaches worth it is a separate question, answered honestly in the best time to visit Cat Ba; costs for both halves are in the budget guide.
How we plan a split stay
We are a family of 15 rooms in Viet Hai, one of the 87 households here, so we only have one half of your trip to sell you — which is why we will tell you plainly when a split is not worth it. Send us your dates and your flight or ferry out, and we will come back with which nights go where, which day to put the bay tour on, and what the crossing to Ben Beo costs for your group. Breakfast is included, bicycles are 30,000 VND a day, and the Lan Ha Bay ticket is 120,000 VND for adults and 60,000 VND for children. Boat and transfer rates move with the season and the size of the group, so message us rather than working from a table.
Questions we get
Should I stay in Cat Ba town or Viet Hai village?
Town if you want beaches, restaurants and an easy early departure. The village if you came for Lan Ha Bay, the trek and the quiet. With three nights or more you can have both; with two, pick one and give it the full stay.
Can I stay in Viet Hai for only one night?
You can, and plenty of guests do, but one night means one boat in, one dinner, and a boat out the next morning — the bay tour and the trek both need a full day. Two nights is where the village starts to pay off.
Is Cat Ba town worth a night with the construction?
For one night at the end of a trip, yes: the beaches and the restaurants still work and you are close to the ferry. Which streets are affected changes through the year, so ask us before you book a town hotel and we will say what we are hearing from guests that month.
How do I get between the village and the town?
A boat from Ben Beo harbour, about 15 minutes across the bay, then an electric cart between the village harbour and our door — 50,000 VND per person each way, about ten minutes. We arrange the boat for guests and match it to your check-out.
Tell us your dates and your way out of the island and we will split the nights for you.
