Why is cycling in Viet Hai different from the rest of Cat Ba?
Viet Hai sits inside Cat Ba National Park, reachable by boat and then a short ride through a tunnel in the rock. Because no road links the valley to Cat Ba town — geography, not regulation — there is no through traffic. What is left is a strip of tarmac between rice fields, buffalo pasture and jungle-covered karst.
This makes it one of very few places in Vietnam where a family can ride side by side, or where a nervous cyclist can look up at the scenery rather than at the road.
How much does bike hire cost in Viet Hai?
We hire bicycles at 30,000 VND per bike for the whole day (free for guests who book a tour with us) — a little over one US dollar. They are ordinary single-speed and basic-gear town bikes: fine for the valley, not built for mountain descents. Elsewhere on the island expect 30,000–80,000 VND a day.
Two practical notes: there are no helmets on standard village hire bikes, and there is no bike shop in the valley. If a tyre goes flat, someone here will patch it, but plan your ride within walking distance of home.
Which cycling routes are worth riding in Viet Hai?
1. The valley loop — 45 minutes, flat, easy
Out along the main road past the rice fields, round the far end of the valley where the buffalo graze, and back. Almost entirely flat, no navigation required, and the best light is the hour before sunset. This is the ride most guests do twice.
2. Village to the pier — 30 minutes each way, one small climb
The road down to Viet Hai pier passes through the tunnel and out to the water. There is one modest hill. Ride it in the morning and you will meet boats coming in; ride it at dusk and you get the bay turning gold.
3. Village to the national park boundary — 1.5 hours, moderate
For riders who want effort. The road climbs gently towards the park, the jungle closes in, and the temperature drops noticeably under the canopy. Take water; there is nowhere to buy it.

What is the best time of day to cycle in Viet Hai?
Between May and September, ride before 9am or after 4pm and rest through the middle of the day — the valley holds heat. From October to April you can ride at any hour. After rain the road is clean and the karsts are unusually sharp; the hour after a summer downpour is the best riding of the year.
What should you know before cycling in Viet Hai?
- Take water. There are no shops in the valley at all.
- Bring cash if you plan to reach the pier area; small stalls do not take cards.
- Sun cover beats sunscreen — a long-sleeve shirt is cooler than it sounds.
- Mosquito repellent at dusk, especially near the fields.
- Lights. Village bikes have none, and the valley is genuinely dark after sunset. Be back before then, or carry a torch.
- Children: this is the safest road most families will find in Vietnam, but there are still scooters. Keep them on the right.
Where else can you cycle on Cat Ba Island?
The main island road between Cat Ba town and the national park headquarters is a serious ride: long climbs, real traffic including tour buses, and no shoulder in places.
