Dinner at Lan Homestay is one long table, one set of dishes in the middle, and everyone who is staying that night. There is no menu, no table for two and no service in courses. The food is what the valley and the bay produced that day, cooked in a family kitchen. For some people that is the reason they come back; for a few it is not what they expected. Here is exactly what happens, so you can decide which you are.
What food is served at a Viet Hai village dinner?
Vietnamese home cooking, family style. Rice, a soup, greens from the plots you can see from the lane, a braised or grilled fish from the bay, something fried, herbs, chilli and fish sauce on the side. Everything arrives at once and everyone helps themselves. Nobody serves you a plate.
The vegetables are the giveaway that this is not restaurant food. They taste of the season and sometimes there is a lot of one thing because that is what was ready.

The hotpot on a cold evening in January is the best meal we serve all year, and it is the one people most often wish they had ordered the day before.
Why does everyone eat at one table?
Practicality first: fifteen rooms in a village with no restaurants means cooking once, well, for everyone. But the effect is the part that matters. Two dozen people who have spent the day on the same water end up talking, and a good half of the friendships in our guest book started because two parties of two were seated at the same end of a table with nothing else to do.
If you want a quiet table for two, say so and we will arrange it. It is not the default, and most people who ask on arrival end up joining the table anyway by the second night.
Where does the food in Viet Hai come from?
The valley grows vegetables and herbs. The bay provides fish, and some of it comes from the floating farms you can see on a boat day. Rice and staples come across by boat. Nothing travels far, not because of a sourcing policy but because there is no road to bring anything in on.
It also means there is very little packaging, which is worth knowing if you are trying to travel without leaving plastic behind.
What do drinks cost at a village dinner?
Drinks are self-service and added to your bill; everything is settled at checkout rather than paid meal by meal. Breakfast is included. We take VND, USD and EUR, and cards with a 3% fee — and there is no ATM in the village.
Can you help cook?
Yes, and rainy afternoons are when people usually ask. It is not a staged cooking class with printed recipes — it is lunch, and you are cleaning squid or rolling something. If you want that, mention it in the morning rather than at 17:00.

What time is dinner?
Around 18:30. If you are on the sunset boat and arriving at 20:00, we know, and we keep food back.
I am vegetarian. Is that a problem?
Not at all, with notice. Vietnamese home cooking has a lot of vegetables in it already.
Can I eat somewhere else in the village?
There is very little else. That is the nature of a village of 87 households.
Is the food spicy?
Not by default. Chilli is on the table for those who want it.
What about children?
