Landing at Hai Phong’s Cat Bi airport puts you about 90 minutes from Cat Ba town door to door, and the return for a morning flight is the part most people get wrong. Cat Bi is the closest airport to Cat Ba Island — far closer than Hanoi — and for anyone arriving from Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang or Bangkok it removes an entire road day. The catch is on the way out: the ferry and the village boat both run on daylight, not on your boarding pass, so an early flight has to be planned backwards from the gate.

What the route actually looks like
Cat Bi sits on the eastern edge of Hai Phong city. From the terminal you drive east out of the city, cross to Cat Hai on the Tan Vu bridge, and board the Dong Bai ferry for the short crossing to Cat Ba Island. The old Got harbour route no longer operates, so any guide or driver still quoting Got is working from old information. On the island side the road runs down the length of the island to Cat Ba town.
Three pieces make up the time: roughly 40 minutes of road from the airport to the ferry slip, the crossing itself, and about 30 minutes from the island ferry pier into town. The crossing is the only part nobody controls. On an ordinary weekday the boats leave often enough that you queue briefly and go. On a Vietnamese public holiday weekend the queue is the whole story — we cover which dates do this in our guide to Cat Ba on Vietnamese holidays.
If you are comparing this with coming in from the capital, our Hanoi to Cat Ba guide has the longer version of that journey, and Hai Phong to Cat Ba covers the same leg starting from the city centre or the train station rather than the airport.
Reaching Viet Hai the same day you land
Viet Hai has no road connection to the rest of the island, so the last stage is a boat from Ben Beo harbour — about 15 minutes across Lan Ha Bay, then about 10 minutes by electric cart from the village harbour to our door. That means your arrival in the village is governed by daylight and by the bay, not by the road.
As a working rule: land before early afternoon and you will have dinner with us the same evening. Land in the late afternoon and the sensible move is a night in Cat Ba town and the boat the next morning. We would rather tell you that than put you on the water at dusk. The practical details of this last leg are in how to get to Viet Hai village, and we arrange the boat for guests as part of transportation to Lan Homestay — rates move with the season and the size of the group, so message us with your flight number and we will quote it.
One thing to settle before you fly: who is meeting you. A driver waiting at arrivals with your name on a card is the difference between 90 minutes and half a day of asking around. Send us the flight and we will tell you honestly whether a private car, the public bus, or a night in town is the better call for that particular landing time.
The return: work backwards from the gate
This is where plans break. An early departure from Cat Bi means leaving the island before most of the island is awake, and if you are staying in Viet Hai it means leaving the village the evening before or on a very early boat. The table below is how we plan it with guests. Treat the departure times as the cushion we recommend, not the minimum that is physically possible.
| Flight from Cat Bi | Leave Cat Ba town | Leave Viet Hai | How | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Before 08:00 | Not realistic the same morning | Night before, sleep in town | Afternoon boat, hotel in Cat Ba town, private car at dawn | Trying to do it in one morning and missing the ferry |
| 08:00–10:00 | About 05:30 | Night before, or first boat if we can arrange it | Private car to the ferry, earliest crossing | First crossing fuller than expected |
| 10:00–13:00 | About 07:30 | Early boat the same morning | Boat to Ben Beo, cart, private car | Weather on the bay leg |
| After 13:00 | About 09:30 | Morning boat, breakfast with us first | Ordinary morning transfer | Holiday ferry queue |

Two notes on that table. First, the bay leg is the weather-sensitive one: in the storm season a boat can be held for a few hours, and no amount of planning changes that — which is why we move guests with a tight morning flight into town the evening before. Second, cash for the ferry and the road is worth having on you; our note on money and ATMs on Cat Ba covers where to get it.
When Cat Bi is the better airport
Cat Bi earns its place when your inbound flight is domestic or regional — Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Bangkok, Seoul — and you want the island on day one instead of day two. It also suits a short trip: two nights in Viet Hai is a real holiday if you are not spending six hours of it on the road.
Hanoi is the better entry when you are arriving long-haul, when you want a night in the capital anyway, or when your route includes other stops in the north — see our ten-day northern Vietnam itinerary and the 2, 3 and 5 day Cat Ba itineraries for how the days fall out either way. Costs for both routes are set out in the Cat Ba budget guide.
Season matters more than the airport, in the end. A clear week in the shoulder season is worth more than a direct flight into rain — our page on the best time to visit Cat Ba is blunt about which months those are, and what to pack assumes you will get wet at least once.
How we handle airport arrivals
We are a family of 15 rooms in Viet Hai, one of 87 households in a village with no road in, so every guest arrives by boat and we plan every arrival by hand. Send us your flight number and we will tell you which crossing you will make, whether you reach the village that day or sleep in town, and what the transfer costs for your group size and date. Breakfast is included, bicycles are 30,000 VND a day, and if your last morning is an early flight we will have you on the water before the village is up. Rates for boats and transfers move with the season and the size of the group, so message us rather than guessing from a table.
Questions we get
How early must I leave Cat Ba for a 9am flight from Cat Bi?
Leave Cat Ba town around 05:30 for a 9am departure, and plan to be in town the night before rather than on the island’s far side. From Viet Hai that means taking an afternoon boat the previous day. A 9am flight and a sunrise in the village do not fit in the same morning.
Is there a direct transfer from Cat Bi airport to Cat Ba?
There is no single ticket that covers the whole way. The journey is road, then the Dong Bai ferry, then road again, and the usual arrangement is a private car that stays with you through the crossing. We book that for guests; send us the flight number and we will quote it for your group.
Can I fly into Cat Bi and reach Viet Hai the same day?
Yes, if you land before early afternoon. After that the sensible plan is a night in Cat Ba town and the morning boat, because the last stage crosses Lan Ha Bay and we will not run guests across the bay after dark.
Does the ferry still leave from Got harbour?
No. Got harbour is closed and the crossing now runs from Dong Bai. If a driver or an older guide quotes Got, the information is out of date — check the current ferry page.
Something not covered here? Message us on WhatsApp with your dates and flight and we will answer with the real times for that day.
