How much cash should you carry on Cat Ba?
For two people spending three nights on the island, somewhere between 3 and 6 million VND covers everything comfortably including boats, tickets, food and a margin. The fixed costs that must be paid in cash are small but constant:
- Lan Ha Bay entrance ticket — 120,000 VND per person
- National park — 160,000 VND adult at the main gate, 80,000 VND child; the Ninh Tiep and Phu Long routes are 80,000 VND adult
- Electric cart, pier to village — 50,000 VND per person
- Bicycle — 30,000 VND per day
- Taxi to the park gate — around 350,000 VND
- Luggage forwarded by boat — 350,000 VND
Can you pay by card on Cat Ba Island?
We accept VND, USD and EUR, and cards with a 3% processing fee — which is standard on this island rather than a markup. All prices may attract 7% VAT. Meals and drinks are added to your bill and settled at checkout rather than paid each time.
If you pay in USD or EUR anywhere in Vietnam, the exchange rate you get will not be as good as changing money properly. Carry VND.
What money habits help on Cat Ba Island?
- Break big notes early. A 500,000 VND note at a fruit stall creates a change problem worth more than the fruit. Break them at hotels and supermarkets.
- Count the zeros. 50,000 and 500,000 look alike in low light. This is the most common honest mistake in both directions.
- Withdraw a larger amount once rather than small amounts repeatedly; per-withdrawal fees are the same either way.
- Keep a small waterproof stash. Boat days involve water.
- Take a photo of your card details? No. Take a note of your bank’s blocked-card number instead.
What if you run out?
In the village, tell us. We can settle up by bank transfer, take a card with the 3% fee, or arrange for you to pay in town on your way out. Nobody has ever been stuck here over money. But it is a boat ride to the nearest cash machine, and that boat runs on the bay’s schedule, not yours.
Do you tip on Cat Ba Island?
Not expected, and not built into prices the way it is in the US. It is appreciated for guides and boat crews and it goes to the person rather than the business. There is no correct percentage.
