Cat Ba on Vietnamese Holidays: Dates to Avoid

Blue kayaks lined up on the beach at sunset in Lan Ha Bay

Three windows fill Cat Ba town completely — 30 April–1 May, 2 September, and summer weekends from June to August — and on those days the ferries, the beaches and the boat prices all change; Viet Hai stays quiet because it has no beach and no road. We are the Lan family, and we live in Viet Hai, a village inside the Cat Ba archipelago. Cat Ba’s busy calendar is set by Vietnamese holidays, not by international ones, so a date that looks quiet from Europe or Australia can turn out to be the busiest weekend of the year. This guide lists the dates to watch in 2026–2027 and what actually changes on them.

Cat Ba holiday crowds at a glance

Busiest dates 30 April–1 May, 2 September, and Friday–Sunday from June to August
Also busy The week of Tet (Lunar New Year), around 6 February in 2027

Why Vietnamese holidays matter more than the season

Cat Ba is the nearest island with beaches to Hanoi and Hai Phong. When the whole country gets a long weekend, families and groups of friends drive or take the bus to the coast, and Cat Ba town is one of the first places they think of. On those days the town changes character: karaoke on the waterfront, every hotel full, the beaches at Cat Co packed, and queues at the ferry.

That has little to do with the weather. October is our favourite month for the weather, but the weekend of 2 September can be busier than any day in October. Our best time to visit Cat Ba guide covers the weather month by month; this guide is only about the crowds.

Vietnamese holidays and Cat Ba: the 2026–2027 calendar

Holiday How busy Ferries and boats Rooms in Cat Ba town Viet Hai
New Year, 1 January 2027 Moderate; mostly a long weekend for city residents Normal, some extra weekend traffic Slightly higher at the weekend Quiet
Tet, around 6 February 2027 Busy for about a week; many shops and restaurants close for the first days Busy on the days around the holiday; book bus seats early Higher; some small hotels close Quiet, family time in the village
Hung Kings Day (10th day of the 3rd lunar month, April) Busy if it joins a weekend Busier than normal Higher at the weekend Quiet
30 April–1 May The busiest days of the year Queues at Dong Bai ferry; buses sell out Much higher; town often fully booked Quiet, but our rooms book out early
Summer weekends, June–August Very busy Friday to Sunday Busy on Friday and Sunday Higher at weekends all summer Quiet; weekdays are calm everywhere
2 September (National Day) Very busy, often a long weekend Queues at the ferry; buses sell out Much higher; town often fully booked Quiet

The exact days off around Tet, Hung Kings Day and 2 September are announced each year by the government, and they often move to make a longer weekend. If your dates fall within a few days of one of these holidays, send us the dates and we will tell you how busy it is likely to be.

What actually changes on a holiday

  • Getting here. On a normal day the trip from Hanoi takes 3–3.5 hours by bus and ferry via Dong Bai pier. On the eve of a holiday the buses sell out and the ferry has queues, so the same trip can take noticeably longer. Our Hanoi to Cat Ba guide explains the route; on holidays, book your seat several days ahead.
  • The beaches. Cat Co beaches in town are full from morning to evening. If beaches are why you came, read our Cat Ba beaches guide and plan for an early swim.
  • Boats on the bay. More boats go out from Cat Ba town and Ben Beo, and the most famous stops are crowded at midday. Lan Ha Bay is large, though, and a small boat can still find empty water. Prices for boat trips in town go up.
  • Rooms and food. Hotels in town raise rates and fill early, and restaurants on the waterfront are full. Our Cat Ba budget guide shows how prices move across the year.

Why Viet Hai stays quiet

Viet Hai is a farming and fishing village of 87 households on the far side of the national park from Cat Ba town. There is no road in: you arrive by speedboat from Ben Beo pier — about 15 minutes on the water, then about 10 minutes by electric cart, 25–30 minutes in all — or you trek through the national park. There is no beach in the village and no nightlife. Those are exactly the things holiday crowds come for, so most of them never make the trip.

On 2 September the waterfront in town can be loud until late; in Viet Hai the evening sounds are the same as on any other night. Our guide to where to stay on Cat Ba Island compares the town and the village honestly, and a night in Viet Hai describes what the evenings are like.

One honest caveat: because Viet Hai is quiet on holidays, our rooms are the ones that book out first. If your dates are fixed on 30 April or 2 September, book early.

If your dates fall on a holiday

  • Book transport first. Bus seats sell out before rooms do. We can book the bus and meet you with the speedboat at Ben Beo.
  • Arrive the day before, leave the day after. The eve of a holiday and its last afternoon are the worst times on the road.
  • Go on the bay early. On a full-day Lan Ha Bay tour we start before the town boats and stay away from the busiest stops.
  • Plan a day on land. Cycling around Viet Hai or the Navy Peak hike is the same on a holiday as on any other day.
How we plan it with you

Send us your dates and we will tell you honestly whether they fall on a busy weekend, book the bus from Hanoi or Hai Phong before seats run out, meet you with the speedboat at Ben Beo, and plan your bay day to stay ahead of the holiday boats. FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Answered by the Lan family in Viet Hai — the people who book the buses, run the boats and pick you up at the pier.

Is Cat Ba crowded on 2 September?

Yes. National Day is usually a long weekend, and Cat Ba town, its beaches and the ferry are among the busiest in the country. Book bus seats and rooms well ahead, or stay outside town.

Are prices higher on Vietnamese public holidays?

Yes. Hotels in Cat Ba town raise their rates and fill up, and boat trips in town cost more. The rise is sharpest on 30 April–1 May and 2 September and on summer weekends.

Is Viet Hai busy on holidays too?

No. Viet Hai has no beach, no road and no nightlife, so holiday crowds rarely come. Our rooms do book out earlier on those dates, so reserve ahead if your dates are fixed.

When is Cat Ba quietest?

Weekdays from late September to November, and December to March outside Tet week.
