This is a semi-enclosed bay. What goes in does not flush out to sea the way it would on an open coast — it circulates, catches in the mangroves and settles in the coves. The same coves are where the plankton bloom that makes the water glow at night, and where the beaches worth swimming from are.
What four habits cut your plastic use in Lan Ha Bay?
- Bring a refillable bottle. Almost every place to stay on the island will refill it. Ours will. This one habit removes more plastic than the other three combined.
- Refuse the straw and the wet towel. Both come wrapped, both are single use, both are optional.
- Carry a bag for your own rubbish on boat days. There are no bins on the beaches or the trails.
- Reef-safe sunscreen, and none before night paddling. Sunscreen chemicals harm the plankton, which is the thing you came out at night to see.

What is Cat Ba Island doing about plastic?
A free electric shuttle for visitors has run since 18 April 2025, linking the Phu Long cable car station with the island centre. The stated ambition is to make Cat Ba Vietnam’s first carbon-neutral island destination, using electric buggies and boats. Note what has not happened: there is no ban on petrol vehicles, only a direction of travel. Visitor behaviour is the part nobody can legislate.
Where on Cat Ba is it easiest to go plastic-free?
Viet Hai has no through traffic, not as a policy but because there is no road in. Bicycles are how everyone moves. Food is cooked from what the valley and the bay produced that morning, so it arrives without packaging. Water is refilled, not bought. None of that is a green initiative; it is just how a village of 87 households on the far side of a mountain has always worked.

Buying carbon offsets for a bay boat is not where the leverage is here. Neither is agonising over whether to come at all. The leverage is in the bottle, the straw, the bag and where you spend money — which is to say, it is in the small stuff, done consistently.

One straw, no. A boat of fourteen people refusing straws twice a day for a season, yes — and the crews notice and stop stocking them.
