Sapa to Cat Ba Island: Three Ways to Link the Mountains and the Bay

Speedboat anchored while swimmers are in the water, Lan Ha Bay

Sapa to Cat Ba is about 400 km and there is no way to do it in under nine hours. Every route runs through Hanoi or Hai Phong, and the last leg is a ferry. The realistic options are a night bus into Hanoi and a morning transfer out, or the new Lao Cai–Hanoi–Hai Phong railway once it opens. Doing it in one hop is possible; doing it comfortably takes a night in between.

How do you get from Sapa to Cat Ba Island?

Route Total time Overnight? Best for
Sapa night bus to Hanoi, then morning transfer to Cat Ba ~14 hrs elapsed On the bus Saving a hotel night, arriving mid-afternoon
Sapa day bus to Hanoi, sleep in Hanoi, transfer next morning Two half days In Hanoi Anyone who does not sleep on buses
Sapa to Hai Phong via Hanoi, then ferry 10–12 hrs Optional Travellers with a private car

Why combine Sapa and Lan Ha Bay in one trip?

Sapa is terraced rice at altitude with cool air and long walks between villages. Lan Ha Bay is limestone out of the sea at sea level. They are the two ends of northern Vietnam’s landscape and doing them back to back gives a trip a shape it otherwise lacks. The cost is a long transfer day, which is why most people put Hanoi in the middle.

Is the Sapa night bus worth taking?

Sleeper buses from Sapa to Hanoi leave in the evening and arrive between 04:00 and 06:00. They are reclining pods, not beds, and the roads on the descent from Sapa are winding. If you sleep on buses, this saves you a night and a hotel. If you do not, you arrive in Hanoi wrecked and then spend five hours getting to Cat Ba, which is a bad day.

Buses drop in the Old Quarter area. From there, the Cat Ba transfers leave between about 07:30 and 11:00, so there is a gap to fill — most people find a cafe.

Should you take the train from Sapa?

Construction on the Lao Cai-Hanoi-Hai Phong railway began on 19 December 2025: 390.9 km of standard-gauge line designed for 160 km/h, due to be completed by 2030 at the latest. When it runs it will connect the Sapa side directly to Hai Phong, 40 minutes from the Cat Ba ferry. That is years away — plan around the roads.

How do you reach Viet Hai village from Cat Ba?

Every route ends in Cat Ba town. If you are staying in Viet Hai there is one more short crossing from Ben Beo Harbour, plus an electric cart into the valley. Two fixed costs: the Lan Ha Bay ticket, 120,000 VND per person, and the cart, 50,000 VND per person. After a fourteen-hour travel day, having that arranged rather than negotiated on a dock is worth a lot. Full detail in how to get to Viet Hai Village.

What should you know before travelling Sapa to Cat Ba?

  • Do not book a same-day onward flight. Between June and September, bad-weather warnings stop the boats entirely.
  • Sapa is cold, Cat Ba is not. In winter that is a 10°C difference; pack for both.
  • Withdraw cash before you leave the mainland. No ATM in Viet Hai.
  • Two nights minimum on the island, or the transfer eats the visit.
  • Motion sickness: the Sapa descent and the ferry are the two rough bits. Take something for both.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Answered by the Lan family in Viet Hai — the people who run the boats, cook the dinner and pick you up at the pier.

Is there a direct bus from Sapa to Cat Ba?

Some agencies sell a through ticket, but it is two or three vehicles plus a ferry with the changes handled for you, not one bus.

Which direction is better?

Sapa first, then Cat Ba. Walking in the mountains then slowing down by the sea works better than the reverse.

Can I fly?

There is no airport at Sapa. Hai Phong’s Cat Bi Airport is the closest to the island and a second terminal is due around 2027, but you would still be starting with a road journey out of Sapa.

How much should the whole thing cost?

Sapa to Hanoi runs roughly 300,000–500,000 VND depending on the class of bus; Hanoi to Cat Ba is similar again. Private cars are priced per vehicle.

Where should I break the journey?

Hanoi is the obvious choice. Ninh Binh also works if you are willing to add a day — see our Ninh Binh to Cat Ba guide.
