The best light in Lan Ha Bay lasts about forty minutes and happens twice a day, and almost every visitor is somewhere else for both of them. Day boats leave around nine and come back around four, which brackets the two hours the bay actually looks like the photographs. If you care about the pictures, the single most useful decision you can make is where you sleep — not what lens you bring.

What time of day is best for photographing Lan Ha Bay?
| Time | What you get | Where to be |
|---|---|---|
| 05:30–07:00 | Mist on the water and in the valley, flat light, no boats | Village valley or a ridge |
| 07:00–09:00 | Clean side light on the karsts | On the water, early |
| 09:00–15:00 | Harsh overhead light, hazy in summer | Under cover; swim instead |
| 16:00–18:00 | The good hour. Warm light, long shadows, empty water | On the bay or the valley |
| After dark, around a new moon | Bioluminescence | In a kayak, no lights |
Why does staying in Viet Hai village change your photos?
Day boats operate inside the middle of the day. If you are on one, you are on the water when the light is worst and back on land when it is best. Staying in Viet Hai puts you inside the bay overnight, which means the 06:00 mist and the 17:00 gold are both a walk away rather than a boat ride away.

Which are the best photo spots in Lan Ha Bay?
- Navy Peak — 360 degrees over both bays. Three hours return from the village, 80,000 VND entrance from that side. Best at sunrise; take a head torch. Details in our Navy Peak guide.
- Ngu Lam Peak — the shorter climb from the national park headquarters, with a platform looking over forest and water.
- The valley floor at dawn — buffalo, mist, rice fields, no elevation required.
- Cove beaches in the late afternoon — reachable by kayak, empty after four.
- Cai Beo floating village — best in the morning when it is working. Ask before photographing people; these are homes.
What can you realistically expect to photograph?
Three things nobody mentions. First, summer haze: June to August often gives milky light and no distant detail, whatever the forecast says. Second, February sea mist can hide the karsts entirely for days, which is beautiful in its own way and useless for the shot you planned. Third, phone cameras see almost nothing of bioluminescence — the glow is real and your photos of it will not be.
October to December is the clear window. That is not a coincidence; it is when the air is driest.

Can you fly a drone over Lan Ha Bay?
The aerial shots of this valley are the ones that travel furthest, and they come with a real responsibility. Do not fly near coastal cliffs: the Cat Ba langur, just over 90 left and found nowhere else, lives on exactly those ledges, and drone disturbance pushes animals off them. Do not fly over the floating villages or over people’s houses. Wind funnels between the karsts and is stronger than it looks from the water.
What camera kit should you bring to Lan Ha Bay?
- A dry bag, not a camera bag, on any boat or kayak day.
- Lens cloths. Salt spray and humidity are constant.
- Battery discipline. No charging on a small boat, and power cuts happen in the village.
- Nothing you would mind dropping in a kayak at night.
- A polariser is the one filter that genuinely changes the water here.

Frequently asked questions
Answered by the Lan family in Viet Hai — the people who run the boats, cook the dinner and pick you up at the pier.
Best month for photography?
November. Dry, clear, warm, and the bay is quiet.
Can I get a boat out at sunrise?
Yes, with notice the night before. It is not a scheduled departure.
Can I photograph inside the caves?
Yes, with a torch and a tripod. Do not light roosting bats.
Is a drone allowed?

Where is the shot of the whole valley taken from?
The ridge behind the village, and Navy Peak. Both on foot, both before eight in the morning.
