Cat Ba is one of the easier islands in Vietnam to bring a small dog to, and Viet Hai Village is the easiest part of it. There is no through traffic in the valley, the whole place is flat, and we take small pets by arrangement — one condition: bring your dog’s own bed or crate. The complications are all in the getting there: buses and ferries have their own rules, the national park does not allow dogs on the trails, and the heat between June and August is genuinely dangerous for a dog that is not used to it.

Why does Viet Hai village work well with a dog?
The reason people bring dogs here is the absence of traffic. There is one flat road through the valley, and what uses it is bicycles and a handful of electric carts moving at walking pace. A dog can be off the lead in a way that is simply not possible in Hanoi, or in Cat Ba town.
There are also village dogs — friendly, well used to visitors and completely uninterested in rules. If your dog is reactive to other dogs, that is the thing to think about, not the traffic.

Is the heat on Cat Ba dangerous for dogs?
June to August runs to 32°C with very high humidity. For a northern European dog that is dangerous, not uncomfortable. If you are travelling with a dog, come between October and April. In December and January the valley is 15–20°C and perfect for walking.
Whatever the month: walk early and late, carry water for the dog as well as yourself, and do not take a dog onto exposed limestone in the middle of the day. The rock gets hot enough to burn paws.
What can a homestay do for guests with dogs?
We take small pets by arrangement: tell us when you book, and bring your dog’s own bed or crate — that is the one condition, because the rooms are shared by the next guest. Dogs are welcome in the garden and, on their own bed, in the room. What we cannot do is take a dog on the bay boats — space, other guests and safety make that impractical — so a boat day means someone stays behind, or the dog stays at the homestay. Say so when you book and we will work out the day around it.
Dogs are not allowed on the national park trails. Between the macaques and the protected wildlife, that rule is not going to bend.
What should you know before bringing a dog to Cat Ba?
- Bring the vaccination record. Rarely asked for, awkward if it is asked for and you do not have it.
- No vet in the village. The nearest is in Cat Ba town, and it is a boat ride away. Bring anything your dog needs regularly.
- Buffalo. The valley has working buffalo in the fields. Keep the dog under control around them; a buffalo will not lose that argument.
- Ticks. Check after any walk in long grass or forest edge.
- Food. Bring it. There is no pet food in the village.

What does a day on Cat Ba with a dog look like?
Early walk through the valley before the heat. Breakfast in the garden. A long middle of the day in the shade. Late afternoon on the flat lane or at the water’s edge. Dinner at the long table with the dog under it. That is not a compromise version of a Cat Ba trip — for a lot of people it is the better version.

Can I bring a dog to Vietnam at all?
Yes, with the right import paperwork, which is handled at the country level and well before you get to any island. Check the current requirements with your airline and Vietnamese authorities.
Are dogs allowed on the beaches?
On the quiet bay beaches, in practice yes. On the town beaches in high season, be sensible.
Will my dog be safe from other dogs?
Village dogs are used to visitors and generally relaxed. If yours is not relaxed, keep it on a lead for the first day.
Can the dog come on a kayak?
Some dogs love it. Life jacket, calm water, short trip, and only if the dog is genuinely comfortable.
What about cats and other pets?
Small pets by arrangement: ask when you book and bring the animal’s own bed, crate or carrier. Large dogs, or animals that need to be loose in the room, we cannot take. The village is a farm, so anything that chases chickens stays on a lead.
How do I get a dog from Hanoi to Cat Ba?
By private car. The Hanoi–Cat Ba buses and limousines do not take animals, so we arrange a car to Dong Bai pier, the ferry crossing with the dog on deck, the road to Ben Beo and the 30-minute speedboat to the village, in a carrier or on a lead.
