Navy Peak is a three-hour return walk from Viet Hai Village that ends with Lan Ha Bay on one side, Ha Long Bay on the other and Cat Ba National Park behind you. The Ninh Tiep route ticket is 80,000 VND for adults and 40,000 VND for children, against 160,000 VND at the main park gate. It is moderate rather than hard, but the limestone is sharp and it is slippery when wet. This is the best three hours on the island for the effort involved.
What is the route up Navy Peak?
The trail starts at the edge of the village, crosses the flat valley floor, then turns uphill through forest. The climb is steady rather than brutal for the first half, then steepens onto a rocky spine near the top. There is a small structure at the summit — this was a military lookout, hence the name — and the view opens the moment you reach it.

What can you see from the top of Navy Peak?
North and east, the karsts of Ha Long Bay. South and west, Lan Ha Bay and the outer islands. Directly below, the whole Viet Hai valley — the fields, the pond, the roofs. On a clear day in November you can see boats out at the far edge of the bay. In February you may see nothing but cloud, which has its own quality.
What is the best time to hike Navy Peak?
Early morning or late afternoon. The middle of the day in summer on exposed limestone is genuinely unpleasant and there is no shade on the upper section. Sunrise from the top is the best version if you can face a 05:00 start; sunset is easier to organise but means descending in fading light, which needs a head torch.
October to December is the clearest window. June to August it is doable but start at 06:30.

What should you bring hiking Navy Peak?
- Shoes with grip. This is not a sandals walk.
- 1.5 litres of water. Nowhere to refill.
- 80,000 VND cash for the Ninh Tiep route ticket.
- Sunscreen and a hat for the exposed top section.
- A head torch if you are going for sunrise or sunset.
- Insect repellent, particularly in the wet months.
Do you need a guide?
Not strictly — the route is short and the trail is reasonably clear. But a guide from the village knows which sections have shifted after rain, and there is nobody else on this trail on most days. We can arrange one the evening before; it is not something to organise on the morning.
Who should skip the Navy Peak hike?
Anyone with knee trouble — the descent on sharp limestone is the hard part. Small children. Anyone who is not comfortable using their hands on a short scramble. If that is you, the walk to the ridge behind the village gives a good part of the same view for a fraction of the effort.
How does Navy Peak fit into a day in Viet Hai?
Perfectly into a morning. Up at 06:30, back by 10:00, breakfast, and the whole afternoon free for the water. That is the shape of the second day in our three-day itinerary, and it works.

How hard is it, really?
Moderate. If you can walk uphill for forty minutes without stopping, you will be fine.
Can I do it as a day trip from Cat Ba town?
Not easily — you would need a boat both ways plus the walk. It is a walk for people staying in the village.
Is the 80,000 VND entrance a discount?
No, it is simply what that entrance costs. The main gate is 160,000 VND.
Is there phone signal at the top?
Better than in the valley, but do not rely on it.
What about after rain?
Wait a day if you can. Wet limestone on the descent is the most likely way to get hurt on this island.
