📍 Viet Hai, Cat Ba Island · ⏱ 7 min read · Lan Homestay

“Arriving by speedboat to the little harbour as the full moon rose is a memory I will not forget.” — JaneEagle, TripAdvisor (February 2026)

Imagine arriving somewhere by boat — the only way in. No traffic, no exhaust fumes, no motorbike horns. Just rice paddies, limestone mountains, and a village of 60 families who have lived the same way for generations.

This is Viet Hai (Việt Hải) — tucked deep inside Cat Ba National Park on Cat Ba Island, completely inaccessible by road, and one of the most quietly extraordinary places in all of Vietnam. It’s not on most tourist maps. That’s exactly why it’s special.

🗺️ Where Is Viet Hai Village?

Viet Hai sits in a hidden valley on the far side of Cat Ba Island, entirely encircled by primary rainforest and towering karst peaks. It’s part of the Cat Ba Archipelago, which received UNESCO World Heritage status in 2023.

The village has roughly 60 households and ~200 residents. There are no roads connecting it to the rest of Cat Ba Island. To get here, you either:

  • 🚤 Take a speedboat from Ben Beo Pier (~30 minutes)
  • 🥾 Trek 9km through Cat Ba National Park jungle (3–4 hours, challenging)

That natural isolation is precisely what preserved Viet Hai’s character. While the rest of Vietnam races toward modernization, this little valley has been quietly standing still.

Just minutes from Viet Hai’s pier, limestone karsts rise from Lan Ha Bay’s turquoise waters — the playground of our daily tours.

🚗 Vietnam’s Last Car-Free Village

This isn’t a tourism concept. Viet Hai has zero motorized road vehicles — no cars, no motorbikes, no trucks — simply because there are no roads. The main “road” is a concrete footpath wide enough for two people to walk side by side.

Getting around inside the village:

  • 👣 Walking — the default mode, peaceful through rice paddies and garden paths
  • 🚲 Cycling — hire a bicycle from the homestay and ride at your own pace
  • 🛺 Electric cart — small shared carts shuttle goods and elderly residents

The Vietnamese government designated Viet Hai as an eco-tourism village in the early 2000s. The community has maintained its traditional lifestyle ever since — farming rice, raising poultry, fishing the bay, and welcoming curious travelers.

📌 Quick Facts: Làng Việt Hải

  • Population: ~60 households, ~200 residents
  • Access: Boat only (or 9km jungle trek) — zero road connection
  • Transport in village: Walking, bicycle, small electric cart
  • Park: Cat Ba National Park, UNESCO World Heritage Site (2023)
  • Distance from Lan Ha Bay: 5 minutes by boat
  • Nearest accommodation: Lan Homestay (in the village itself)

🌿 What To Do in Viet Hai (A Full Day)

The garden path at Lan Homestay at dusk — lanterns, bamboo groves, and the smell of woodsmoke from the kitchen.

🌅 Dawn: Bicycle through the valley
Borrow a bicycle from Lan Homestay and ride the village paths at sunrise. Rice paddies glow golden-green in the early light. Roosters soundtrack the mountains. It’s one of those moments that makes you want to never leave.

🌾 Morning: Village life immersion
Depending on season, guests can join local families harvesting rice, collecting vegetables, or cooking breakfast over a wood-fire stove. The homestay’s home-cooked meals consistently rank as the highlight of guests’ entire Vietnam trip.

Exploring caves near Viet Hai on Lan Ha Bay tour

Hidden caves, dark grottoes, and enclosed lagoons are a short paddle from Viet Hai’s private pier.

🛶 Afternoon: Kayaking Lan Ha Bay
From Viet Hai’s own pier, you’re minutes away from Lan Ha Bay’s most dramatic limestone formations. Our Full Day Boat Tour takes guests through hidden lagoons and dark cave tunnels only small kayaks can access — and because Lan Ha Bay sees far fewer tourists than Ha Long Bay, you’ll often have entire coves to yourselves.

🥾 Optional: National park trek
The jungle trail from Viet Hai through Cat Ba National Park is one of the island’s great adventures. The challenging 9km version crosses multiple jungle ridges with panoramic views over the bay. Spot langurs, hornbills, and rare plant species along the way.

🌙 Evening: Night kayaking with bioluminescence
On clear nights, paddle out and watch the water come alive with bioluminescent plankton — each stroke of your paddle leaving trails of electric-blue light. This phenomenon is invisible in Ha Long Bay due to cruise ship light pollution. In Viet Hai, the sky is pitch black and the water glows. Our Sunset & Night Kayaking tour is built around it.

Không thể thấy ở Hạ Long.

📅 Thời điểm đẹp nhất

Tháng 3–5: Lý tưởng nhất. Tháng 9–11: Nước trong, ít khách. Tháng 2–3: Sương mù huyền ảo. Tránh tháng 7–8: Mưa bão.
