What makes Cat Ba good for couples?
1. The sunset from a kayak
Two kayaks, flat water, and the hour when the light goes red and gold on the limestone. Or spend a night on the water on the overnight cruise: dinner on deck as the light goes, then squid fishing under the stars. Either way, build one evening of your trip around the water — it is the most memorable thing on this island.
2. A private beach hour
Lan Ha is full of small coves at the foot of limestone islands, most reachable only by kayak or boat, most with nobody on them. Go at the end of the afternoon when the day boats have turned for home. Take water; there is no shade and nothing to buy.
3. The valley at six in the morning
Mist over the rice fields, buffalo being moved, nobody about. It lifts by seven. Most people sleep through it and then say the evening was their favourite part — it was not, they just did not see the other one.
What is eating as a couple at a village homestay like?
Dinner in the village is served at one long table with everyone who is staying. If you want a table for two, say so and we will set one — but be warned that most couples who ask on arrival have joined the long table by the second night, because a village of 87 households does not offer much else and the company turns out to be the good part.

What is the best time of year for a couples trip to Cat Ba?
October and November: dry, clear, warm enough to swim, no crowds. The summer months bring the best chance of bioluminescence but also heat and storm risk. December to February is cool and quiet and very cheap, with mist instead of views — see Cat Ba in winter.
What should couples know before visiting Cat Ba?
- Book ahead in summer. Fifteen rooms total, eight of them doubles.
- Bring cash. No ATM in the village; cards carry a 3% fee.
- No street lighting in the valley — which is why the stars are what they are. Bring a torch for the lane.
