Two names get muddled constantly on Cat Ba: the Frog Pond and the Bat Cave. The Frog Pond — Ao Ech — sits on the long trail that crosses the national park to Viet Hai Village. The cave most people mean by “Bat Cave” is Trung Trang, a show cave near the park headquarters on a completely different, much shorter route. They are not on the same walk. Here is what each one actually is, and how to do either without wasting a day.
Where are Ao Ech and Trung Trang on Cat Ba?
Trung Trang cave is a short walk from the park headquarters, on the marked Kim Giao – Ngu Lam – Trung Trang route. Ao Ech, the Frog Pond, is roughly halfway along the official May Bau – Ao Ech – Ang Phay – Viet Hai trail, which the park classes as a long route of four to five hours. If you want both, you are doing two separate outings.
What is Trung Trang cave like?
A limestone show cave with a wide mouth and, as its local nickname suggests, bats. The floor is uneven and wet in places. You need a torch — a phone light is enough for the entrance chamber and not enough for anything beyond it. Do not shine lights directly at roosting bats and do not shout; both are disturbances that push colonies out of caves permanently.
The temperature drop as you step in is the thing people remember. On a 32°C August afternoon it is startling.
What is Ao Ech, the Frog Pond?
A seasonal freshwater pool in a fold of the forest, about three hours in from the trailhead on the Viet Hai route. In the wet months it is a proper pond, loud with frogs at dusk and full of dragonflies during the day. Between February and April it can be almost dry. It is not spectacular in the way a viewpoint is spectacular; it is the kind of place that rewards sitting still for ten minutes.

Park entry is 160,000 VND for adults and 80,000 VND for children at the main gate; the Kim Giao – Ngu Lam – Trung Trang route is 120,000 VND adult and 60,000 VND child. A taxi from Cat Ba town to the gate runs around 350,000 VND.
What should you bring on the Ao Ech walk?
- A real torch, not just a phone
- Shoes with grip — cave floors are wet limestone
- Insect repellent, especially near the pond in the wet season
- Water, at least a litre each
- Long socks if you are walking after heavy summer rain; leeches appear on the damp sections
Is Ao Ech a good walk in the rain?
The exposed ridge sections of this island are dangerous in heavy rain and the bay boats stop running. This section is neither exposed nor on the water. The forest is at its best after rain, the cave does not care, and the pond is fullest. Our wet weather guide has the wider list.
What wildlife can you see on this trail?
Macaques, frequently, and they are bold — do not eat where they can see you. Birds, butterflies, geckos, and the bats themselves. Not langurs; those live on remote coastal cliffs, not on trails. More in our langur guide.

Do I need a guide?
For this section, no. The trail from the gate to the Frog Pond is reasonably clear. Past the pond it braids and a guide becomes a good idea.
Are the bats dangerous?
No, and they want nothing to do with you. Keep lights and noise down and they will stay where they are.
Can children do it?
The Bat Cave section, yes, with a torch and a hand held on the wet ground. The Frog Pond makes it a long day for small legs.
Is the cave lit?
No. Bring your own light.
Can I combine it with Viet Hai?
Ao Ech, yes — it is the middle of the crossing. Send your bags ahead by boat and walk in. Trung Trang, no: that is on the other side of the park entirely.
