Ben Beo is a working fishing harbour about 2 km east of Cat Ba town, and it is where almost every boat into Lan Ha Bay leaves from. There is no ticket office, no departure board and no queue system. Visitors who turn up expecting a ferry terminal have a bad hour. Visitors who know how it works are on the water in ten minutes. Here is what is actually there.
What is Ben Beo harbour?
A concrete quay, a road down to it, a scatter of small boats and speedboats tied up, and the floating fish farms of Cai Beo just offshore. Cai Beo is one of the oldest fishing settlements in Vietnam: the archaeological site here was found by the French researcher M. Colani in 1938 and its lowest layer dates back roughly 7,000 years. The pontoons you can see from the quay today are homes and fish pens, not an attraction built for visitors.
What Ben Beo is not: a terminal. Nothing is signposted in English. Departure times are informal. Boats leave when they leave.

What does Ben Beo harbour cost?
Whatever boat you take, two charges are standard and identical for everyone: the Lan Ha Bay entrance ticket at 120,000 VND per person, and, if you are crossing to Viet Hai, the electric cart from the pier into the village at 50,000 VND per person. Children under six do not pay the bay ticket. If a quote does not itemise these, ask whether they are included — that is where most of the confusion at this harbour comes from.

How do you get to Ben Beo harbour?
From Cat Ba town it is a short taxi ride or about a 25-minute walk along the coast road. Note that the bus station has moved out to Duong 365 as part of the construction work in town, which is roughly 500 metres from the pier area — so if you arrive by bus you are closer to the harbour than you might expect.
How do you avoid waiting around at Ben Beo?
- Arrange the crossing before you arrive. Whoever you are staying with can have a boat waiting. This is the single biggest difference between a ten-minute transfer and a long negotiation.
- Know the boat’s name. If the person who sold you the ticket cannot tell you, they are a middleman and you will be finding the boat yourself.
- Arrive with small notes. There is no ATM at the harbour.
- Do not plan a tight connection. Boats wait for people and weather; they do not wait for schedules.

When do boats not run from Ben Beo?
Tourist boats are not cleared to leave harbour when a bad-weather warning is in force. Between June and September that is a real possibility on any given day. It is the system working — but it does mean you should not book a same-day flight out of Hai Phong or Hanoi. More on this in our boat safety guide.
Is it worth looking around?
For twenty minutes, yes. Early morning is when the harbour is actually working — fish being landed, boats being loaded, the pontoons at Cai Beo waking up. It is one of the few places on the island where you see the working economy rather than the tourist one. Watch where you walk; it is a quay, not a promenade.

Can I just turn up and get a boat to Viet Hai?
Sometimes, at a price, if someone is free. It is the most expensive and least reliable way to cross.
Is there anywhere to leave luggage?
Not at the harbour itself. Luggage can be stored in Cat Ba town and forwarded across by boat for 350,000 VND — useful if you are walking over the mountain instead.
What time do boats stop?
Transfers run through the day; after dark it is only pre-arranged boats. In winter, everything winds down earlier.
Can I visit the floating village?
