Who is behind Lan Homestay
We are one family, and we have never lived anywhere else. Viet Hai is where our parents farmed and fished, and it is where we built the first three rooms. The house has grown to fifteen, but it is still the same household running it: the same people cooking breakfast, driving the boat and answering the phone at eleven at night when a bus is late.
That matters for one practical reason. When you ask us whether the water will be calm on Thursday, whether the trail is slippery after rain, or whether the last boat has already left, the answer comes from someone who was outside an hour ago — not from a booking desk in another city.
What Viet Hai is actually like
Viet Hai has 87 households. It sits in a flat green valley enclosed by limestone, inside Cat Ba National Park, and the only way in is across the water. Boats come from Ben Beo pier, about fifteen minutes away, and from there it is about a ten-minute electric cart ride along the lane and through the tunnel in the hill to our gate.
The village is quiet in a way that surprises people. There is no night-time noise, mobile signal is patchy in places, and the shop closes early. Some guests find that the point of the trip. Others find one night is enough. We would rather you know which you are before you book.
The rooms, the food and what is included
All fifteen rooms have air conditioning, a private bathroom with hot water, and tea and coffee in the room. Breakfast is included for every guest. Lunch and dinner are cooked to order — the vegetables come from the garden behind the kitchen and the fish from the bay in front of it — and are settled at checkout rather than paid meal by meal.

What we are good at, and what we are not
We are good at the things a family can do well: knowing the bay, cooking for you, sorting out a boat when a plan falls apart, and telling you honestly when the weather will not cooperate. We run our own boats from the village pier, so a change of plan is a conversation, not a cancellation fee.
We are not a resort. There is no lift, no pool bar and no twenty-four-hour reception desk in the hotel sense — though one of us is always awake and reachable. If you need a large conference room, a spa, or a taxi outside your door at six in the morning, Cat Ba town is a better base than our valley.
Questions guests ask before booking
Is Lan Homestay a hotel or a family home?
Both, in a way. It is a licensed fifteen-room guesthouse, but it is run out of our own household in Viet Hai village — the family lives on site and cooks the meals.
Do you speak English?
Yes. We speak English every day with guests, and we answer messages in English on WhatsApp at +84 363 934 325.
Can I reach the village without taking a boat?
No. Viet Hai is inside the national park and the only access is across the water, usually from Ben Beo pier. We arrange the boat and the electric cart for you when you tell us your arrival time.
Is breakfast included in the room rate?
Yes, breakfast is included for every guest. Other meals are cooked to order and added to your bill, which you settle when you check out.
Can I bring my dog?
We are flexible with small pets, but you must bring your own bed or crate for the animal. Note that the buses and limousines between Hanoi and Cat Ba do not accept pets, so plan the journey before you plan the stay.
How much does it cost?
Rates move with the season and the size of the group, so we quote your exact dates. Send us the dates and the number of people on WhatsApp and you will have a price back the same day.
