Fishing and Aquaculture With Viet Hai Villagers

Group kayaking on green water below limestone cliffs, Cat Ba Island

Fishing here is not a tour with a rod hire desk — it is going out with someone from the village who was going anyway. Households in Viet Hai and on the floating farms of Lan Ha Bay fish and raise fish for a living, and a visitor who wants to see how it works can, with a day’s notice and reasonable expectations. You will not catch much. You will learn how a net is set, why the pens are graded by size, and what the tide does to all of it.

What fishing trips can you do in Viet Hai?

Activity Time Notice
Line fishing from a small boat 2–3 hrs The evening before
Going out with a household at dawn Early start, 3–4 hrs A day, weather permitting
Visiting a floating farm and helping feed 1 hr, part of a bay day Mention when booking the boat
Squid fishing after dark 2 hrs A day; needs calm water

None of these are packaged products with fixed departure times. They depend on who is going out that day and what the water is doing, which is exactly why they are worth doing.

What is fishing with Viet Hai villagers like?

Small wooden boat, no seats to speak of, a hand line rather than a rod. The technique is unglamorous: drop, feel, wait, jerk. Most visitors catch nothing for the first hour and then something small, and the boat owner catches four while explaining what you are doing wrong. That is the correct outcome.

Squid fishing at night uses a light over the side to draw them up. It is quieter than day fishing and, on a calm night, one of the better things to do in a valley with no bars.

How does fish farming work in Lan Ha Bay?

The floating farms raise grouper and cobia in net pens under the walkways. If you visit one, ask to see how the pens are graded and how the fish are moved as they grow — it is a genuinely clever system and nobody explains it unless you ask. Feeding happens on a schedule; do not throw food in unless invited.

How to visit one without being a nuisance is a subject in itself — we wrote it up in our floating fish farm guide.

Can you eat the fish you catch?

If you catch anything worth cooking, our kitchen will cook it. If you do not — which is likely — dinner happens anyway, from the same water. Seafood hotpot and BBQ need a day’s notice because ingredients come across by boat. See what a village dinner looks like.

What should you know before going fishing in Viet Hai?

  • Life jacket on. Small boats, no railings.
  • Sun protection. There is no shade on a fishing boat.
  • Do not wear anything you mind ruining. Fishing is a wet, scaly business.
  • Cash for the boat owner. This money goes directly to a household — no ATM in the village, so bring it with you.
  • Motion sickness is worse on a small boat sitting still than on a moving one. Take something beforehand if you are prone.
  • Weather. Nothing goes out under a storm warning — see our boat safety guide.

How do you fish responsibly in Lan Ha Bay?

Keep only what will be eaten. Do not fish inside protected zones — your boat owner knows where those are and will steer you away. Take every scrap of line and packaging back with you; discarded line is the worst thing you can leave in this bay, worse than plastic bottles, because it keeps catching things for years.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Answered by the Lan family in Viet Hai — the people who run the boats, cook the dinner and pick you up at the pier.

Do I need experience?

No. A hand line takes about four minutes to learn and a lifetime to be good at.

Can children come?

Yes, with a life jacket that fits and an adult who is watching. See Cat Ba with kids.

What will I catch?

Small reef fish, if anything. Squid at night, more reliably.

Is there a licence?

Not for line fishing from a local boat as a guest.

How much does it cost?

It depends on the boat and how long you go out for, and it changes. Ask us and we will get the current number from whoever is going.
