Getting from Hanoi to Cat Ba island looks confusing on paper — buses, ferries, speedboats, a pier that changed names, and now talk of a “health declaration” for Vietnam. Don’t worry. We are the Lan family from Viet Hai village, and we help guests make this journey every single week. Here is exactly how it works in 2026, what it costs, and what actually matters (and what doesn’t) about the new health declaration rule.
The Big Change in 2026: Dong Bai Pier Replaces Got Pier
If you researched this route before, forget the old Got Pier — it has closed to tourist traffic. All ferries and speedboats to Cat Ba from the Hai Phong side now leave from Dong Bai Pier, about 20 km east of Hai Phong city center, crossing to Cai Vieng wharf on Cat Ba island.
- Car ferry: roughly every 30 minutes, from about 5:30 AM to 6:30 PM in low season (longer hours in high season). The crossing takes around 15 minutes. Foot passengers pay just a few thousand dong (about 12,000 VND at the time of writing); motorbikes and cars pay more.
- Passenger speedboat: cuts the crossing to under 10 minutes, for roughly 80,000 VND. No vehicles — passengers only.
Schedules shift with the seasons and holidays, so always check the latest times when you book — or ask us and we will confirm the day’s schedule for you.

Your 4 Main Ways from Hanoi to Cat Ba
1. Direct tourist bus (most popular)
Door-to-door combo tickets pick you up in Hanoi’s Old Quarter, drive about 2 hours on the expressway to Hai Phong, then connect to the ferry or speedboat. Total journey: 3–3.5 hours. From Hanoi the bus costs 320,000 VND per person (departures at 7:30, 10:30, 12:00 and 14:00). Coming from Ninh Binh instead? Direct buses run at 7:00, 9:00, 10:00 and 12:00 for 350,000 VND per person.
2. Private car
About 2.5 hours from Hanoi to Dong Bai Pier via the Hanoi–Hai Phong expressway. Best for families with luggage or anyone who wants to leave on their own schedule. Cross as a foot passenger and we can arrange pickup on the island side.
3. Train or bus to Hai Phong, then local transfer
The slow-travel option: reach Hai Phong city, then a 25–30 minute taxi or local bus to Dong Bai Pier. Cheapest, but allow extra time for connections.
4. From Ha Long side (Tuan Chau)
Coming from Ha Long city? Ferries cross from Tuan Chau to Cat Ba’s Gia Luan pier in the island’s north. And since April 2026 there is a new option worth knowing: the official Ha Long Bay–Lan Ha Bay inter-bay cruise routes, whose itineraries include a stop at the Viet Hai village entrance — you can literally arrive at our valley by cruise.

The New Health Declaration: What Travelers Actually Need to Know
You may have read alarming headlines about Vietnam requiring health declarations from July 1, 2026. Here is the honest picture as of mid-July 2026:
- Vietnam issued Decree 165/2026/ND-CP, effective July 1, 2026, creating a legal framework for health declarations at border gates.
- It is not currently active for ordinary travelers. The Ministry of Health has confirmed declarations only switch on if a specific outbreak or public health emergency is announced.
- If activated, the declaration can be completed electronically or on paper within 7 days before entry, in English or Vietnamese. The old tokhaiyte.vn site is not used — an official new system will be announced.
In short: pack your swimsuit, not your worry. Check official announcements shortly before you fly, and see our full Vietnam health declaration entry guide for details. Nothing extra is required for the domestic Hanoi–Cat Ba journey itself.

Getting from the Pier to Viet Hai Village
Cat Ba town is about 30–40 minutes by road from the arrival wharf. Our Cat Ba homestay is in Viet Hai village, tucked inside Cat Ba National Park on the Lan Ha Bay side — quieter, greener, and away from the town’s construction. There is no road access for cars or motorbikes — reaching the village is part of the experience. You have two options:
- Speedboat from Ben Beo Pier: about 10 minutes on the water — 30 USD for 2 people, 5 USD per additional person. Note the Lan Ha Bay entrance ticket of 120,000 VND per person (free for children under 6).
- Trekking through Cat Ba National Park: roughly 4 hours of beautiful jungle trail — we arrange luggage transfer so you walk light.
From Viet Hai pier, a golf cart brings you straight to the homestay (50,000 VND per person). Many guests combine the speedboat transfer with a Lan Ha Bay boat trip so the journey becomes part of the holiday.
